i'd also be interested in something like that. i wouldnt be sending you red artifice decks or white lions since those resellers would probably frown upon that. but i would be interested in getting a couple made with decks that will never be in a AIP bottle, white cents etc. i'd only get 1 made so it wont be for resale purposes.

Jamie, would you be willing to share with us about how much time it takes to create an AIP bottle with a standard deck of Bikes? A couple thousand bottles is a huge number!

That's actually not bad at all, considering an average AIP bottle is $100-$300. I'd rather spend $150 for a custom bottle, then $100 for a standard bike deck.

I always assumed the glass had to be seamlessly moulded around the cards to make these; you make them with pre-existing bottles? Well, I guess you could cut them in half then re-fire them... if you're some kind of silica savant. Can someone be skilled enough to do that without it being painfully obvious?

Like many magic tricks that have me scratching my head, I get to 'that's how I'd do it' and leave it at that. However you do it, they really are truly beautiful creations and hopefully it's a sign of things to come for these forums that someone as established and renowned as yourself has come to us.

He said it himself in the opening post - "ship in a bottle". While some bottled-ship builders use the easy method and opt for a rigged bottle, the good ones do it the old fashioned way. It's very much like assembling a piece of furniture in your apartment that's larger than your doorway...if the parts can fit through the door, you build it inside the apartment.

I know the ship in the bottles thing. I have a friend who does that as a hobby and not just ships, native nipa huts in a bottle as well. But cards? a deck that is still sealed? no matter how hard I think.... it still boggles me. **sigh** well I will not try to figure out how it is done. AIPs are beautiful and I don't want to spoil it for myself. I'm definitely getting myself 1 or 2 on my birthday! I'm so excited!

If a magician can open, rig and reseal a deck, how hard would it be for Jamie Grant, who's also a magician, to do it without rigging the deck?

I've done this before when pulling a gaff card trick on someone. Also the cellophane is available as a separate purchase, since there's a few magic shops selling deck resealers.

I wonder if it would be cool for us to leave out discussions on technique? After all, it's what makes the AIP bottle what it is. If so, that would be awesome~ thanks! (To be honest, that's what's kept me off of a few of the other boards. It goes from talking about art - which I could do all day- to just a dissection. Booo, lol. I know no one means any harm, but it seems that's what's happened in the past). That said, let me sign off on that subject by saying the glass is completely unaltered. I used to drink the chocolate milk myself, lol. Now I just buy them empty.

And this is exactly the kind of thinking that makes us all fellow artists. The joy in seeing each other's work with no other desire than what it's there for. To bring us happiness. I love it- thank you for that post.

To answer a few other questions- I do charge $150 for custom work- that's been my price forever and I keep it that way so it's fair to everyone. That said, I can't do any custom decks that I've already made Limited Editions of obviously.

I'll also see if I can take a picture of that Ripley deck. I love all things Ripley's and it wasn't easy to find!I actually have another one of the exact same deck framed on the wall going downstairs, on the right, but I don't think you can see it...

What about you guys- if you could only have one deck on your shelf, inside a bottle (so I guess handling wouldn't matter)- which would it be?

But besides that, maybe either a blue artifice or a deck from Montreal's casino. That's how much I love the city.

And my apologies for technique discussion. The simple fact remains that even having some clue about how it's made doesn't make it one bit easier to try making it yourself. They're really astounding pieces of art and I look forward to owning one (or more) someday.
