Playing Card Plethora / Sockman's Original Playing Card Socks on KS
« on: February 14, 2018, 12:50:09 PM »
Hey everyone.  Check out the latest KS campaign from Penguin.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/penguinmagic/sockmans-original-playing-card-socks

The main pledge levels are for the sock accessories themselves.  The decks are stretch goals right now, but hopefully they'll be unlocked.

We've been playing with the prototype for awhile now and have some fun ideas for Card to Impossible Location type routines, etc.

While it looks simple, we actually went through several manufacturers and made several prototypes to make the sock look, feel, and fit perfectly on a standard poker deck.  We're not just buying socks off the shelf and cutting them down to size - this is a totally custom product.

In road testing the prototype with some performances, it definitely elicits chuckles and amused reactions to pull out a mini sock and take your deck out of it. The goal of this item is to be quirky, fun, and unusual.

We should have a video posted before long to explain more about the product.

We also do have custom decks designed that we've placed as stretch goals.  So if we hit those goals, anyone who digs the decks but not the socks will be able to snag those.

Thanks!

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Tally-Ho Circle Back Origin Date?
« on: November 28, 2017, 04:10:48 PM »
I'm having a heck of a time figuring out when the Circle Back Tally-Ho design first saw print.  I know Tally-Ho as a brand first hit in 1885, but as far as I can tell it was with a different back design.

Early Circle Back decks had a design that looked different from today's decks (see photos) but I can't pinpoint when they were first printed, or when the design changed from the photos here to the design we see today.

Any help is appreciated!

Playing Card Plethora / Choice Cloverbacks by Ben Kolozsi and Penguin
« on: November 08, 2017, 08:30:57 AM »
Hi everyone.  Just wanted to give a heads-up on our new KS campaign starting today.  It will be launching around Noon (12PM) eastern time.

EDIT: LIVE!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/penguinmagic/choice-cloverback-playing-cards-designed-by-ben-ko

Choice Cloverbacks are a follow-up to Blue Choice.  The design has been tweaked, and there are 2 new colors - Classic Red and Casino Brown.  Brown are limited to only 1,000 decks.

Like Blue Choice, these will be on Thin Crush stock from USPCC.

We have some great early bird levels, so please be sure to check it out!  I'll post back here with a link to the campaign page once it's live.

Hey everyone, I hope you're all doing well!

I wanted to give you all a heads-up that Penguin will be launching our first Kickstarter in just over 24 hours. We're taking Valentine's Day, the sweetest day of the year, and adding a little Honey!

Honeybees are one of our favorite decks that we've produced, and were also our quickest to sell out.  We get messages every week about whether or not there will be another version, since many people either missed them the first time around, or they want more of them for their collection or day-to-day use. Since day one, we have also gotten a lot of requests asking if we would ever do a bordered version.  On Feb 14th at noon eastern, we're opening up the campaign to deliver on those requests.

The biggest difference in the deck is that the backs are now bordered.  The custom Tuck, Ace of Spades, Joker, and custom color/texture court cards are pretty much the same as the originals. There's a lot that everyone seemed to love about the deck, so it didn't feel right to change things that we thought were already great.  We're also making both the Yellow and Black decks available simultaneously.

I know some of you will ask, "Why Kickstarter, why now?"  For us it's more about the "crowd" and less about the "funding" when it comes to trying this out.  The first Honeybees sold out in 2 days, and a lot of people didn't get their hands on them. Doing a campaign like this hopefully gives folks plenty of time to pledge, and get them at the best price.  It allows us to print the correct number of decks to meet demand without significantly over or under printing.  I hope you guys will see from our goal (Only $12,000 for a 2-deck campaign) and our pledge pricing that we're not trying to make this a "lazy cash grab".

We also worked with Randy Butterfield to create an all-new version of the deck. This one will be a stretch goal and it is GORGEOUS.  It is a black ink and gold foil Metalluxe version of the deck.  If we hit the stretch goal, we're going to pull out all the stops with this deck - black paper tuck with multiple foils - individually numbered seals (limited to 1,000 decks), etc.  I really hope we get to produce it.

I'll be sure to come back tomorrow and update this post with a link to the campaign page.

EDIT: We're live!  https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/penguinmagic/honeybee-v2-playing-cards-by-penguin-magic

Thank you!

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Piatnik Classic
« on: December 01, 2016, 07:24:53 PM »
Does anyone know if this design was made in both bridge and poker size, or just one or the other?

EDIT - Ignore this.  On their US site, it seems they offer it in both sizes.

Playing Card Plethora / Halloween Deck by Natalia Silva
« on: October 11, 2016, 12:56:23 PM »
We at Penguin are so proud to have teamed up again with Natalia Silva for a fantastic holiday deck.

After working with her on the Christmas deck, we took a similar transformation-style approach to creating the Halloween deck, which is now available for preorder over at Penguin.  We have single deck, 3-pack, and 12-pack levels, each of which ship absolutely free in the US.

Check out some photos and a hands-on video at the link below.

Happy Halloween!!

Playing Card Plethora / Blue Choice Deck by Ben Kolozsi
« on: September 20, 2016, 11:55:54 AM »
Hey everyone.  The newest design and color in the Choice lineup from Ben Kolozsi will be released at Penguin tomorrow (Wednesday the 21st).  This is the first-ever deck in the Choice lineup to be blue, and it's also the first to offer a wildly different design from the original Choice decks.

Ben was inspired by the classic and now-unavailable Stud decks and worked hard with USPCC to get the clearance for this awesome tribute design.

We used the new Thin Crush stock from USPCC to really emulate the feel and handling of the vintage decks.  This stock feels amazing - super thin and snappy, yet remarkably durable for such a thin stock.  You really need to feel it to see what the fuss is about.  AFAIK, fewer than 6 other decks on the market have used this stock so far.

This is designed to be a playable/performable deck, so it's not super duper custom.  We do have a custom back, tuck, Ace of Spades, and 3 Jokers (because the old decks had 3 jokers, and we wanted to stick with the tribute theme).  There's also a double-backer included.  Faces and courts are Arrco style.

Those of you in Card Club have had your hands on these for a few weeks, and all the feedback I've gotten is that people really love the feel/handling as well as the fabulous shade of blue.  These have been my favorite EDC deck for the past couple of months, I really love them.

We only had 2,000 printed, and you can get them at Penguin tomorrow.  I seem to be having some trouble with the photo uploads, so I've included an imgur link.  Thanks!

Playing Card Plethora / Woodlands by Qiudi Zhang
« on: August 29, 2016, 01:14:29 PM »
Hey everyone!  I wanted to give you a heads-up on Woodlands, the latest release from Penguin.  These have already shipped as part of the August Card Club, but will be up for general sale tomorrow, which is Tuesday the 30th.

This deck holds 2 "firsts" for Penguin: it has our first sideways-opening tuck, and is our first deck on EPCC's Classic Finish.

The deck is gorgeous.  This is Qiudi's first-ever deck, and she did a really cool nature theme throughout, with a deep green back design featuring stylized owls as the key element.  The tree branch Ace of Spades is super awesome, and there are 2 custom jokers.  The faces are the EPCC standard style, but with a completely new color and background texture on ALL the faces, not just the courts.  The background pattern/texture is also on the back design, giving the cards a nice earthy off-white look.

Keep an eye out at Penguin tomorrow for the release.  In the meantime, I've attached a few photos here.

Hi everyone!

A lot of you are familiar with Jared's Architect deck, either from his Kickstarter campaign or from being in Card Club.

I'm happy to say that the deck will finally hit public release this Thursday. They're printed by EPCC on Damask finish with a gorgeous blue paper tuck with silver foil.

Thanks!

Playing Card Plethora / Card Club from Penguin - New Format
« on: July 05, 2016, 12:06:55 PM »
Hey everyone!  I hope you all had an awesome (and safe!) 4th of July weekend.

I wanted to let everyone know about some changes we're making to the Card Club subscription at Penguin.

If you want to stop reading now and just get all the official info, the link is:

http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/5628

We're keeping the Club at the $20/month plus shipping price tag, and it still contains 4 decks.  However, we're switching to include ONLY decks produced by Penguin and we'll be including 2 each of 2 different designs.  You get one to open and one to keep sealed.  This means a little less variety in each package, but it also eliminates the chance that you might receive a deck that you already own.  It also means you can ignore Penguin release schedules, you'll get decks before they go on sale to everyone else, and you'll get them at the lowest price.

We'll be shipping the July packages later this week, and once a month's packages have gone out there's no backtracking - you can't retroactively subscribe.

This month we have one deck from EPCC and one from USPCC, both designed by Jared Hansen.  I know a lot of you probably backed his Architect deck on Kickstarter, and it is finally seeing the light of day with a massively souped-up tuck box!

Architect: Designed by Jared Hansen and printed by the Expert Playing Card Company, the Architect deck is truly a sight to behold. The tuck box is crafted from a beautiful, heavy-duty deep blue matte paper that's just dripping with intricately applied silver foil. The cards themselves have the look of a blueprint, featuring a beautiful blue & white back design with fine line work. The faces are Expert Standard with a custom Ace of Spades and identical jokers. The handling is superb thanks to Damask finish, which has a medium thickness and snap with an exquisite embossing pattern and texture.

Steeplechase Park: Designed by Jared Hansen, this deck is a tribute to Coney Island's original and longest-running amusement park. The design is wildly colorful and vibrant - a perfect deck for summer. The faces have been completely recolored, and you receive matching custom Jokers and a custom Ace of Spades, as well as 2 useful gaff cards. The custom tuck box is closed with a custom sticker seal. Printed by USPCC on Bicycle stock with premium "Magic" finish, the deck feels and handles wonderfully. Only 2,500 made!

Playing Card Plethora / Black Honeybee - Coming Soon from Penguin
« on: June 06, 2016, 09:55:46 AM »
Hey guys.  Cat is officially out of the bag on Black Honeybees now that they are in the hands of our Card Club members as part of June's subscription package.  (Side note - Card Club will be seeing a lot of early peeks at decks, receiving them before general retail, and of course at the insane per-deck value that we offer in Card Club).

The Black Honeybees will be releasing soon, though I don't have an exact date for you just yet.  They are very much like the original Yellow deck, but now with an awesome black back design.  We also adjusted the colors in the Ace, Jokers, Courts, and Tuck as well to match.  Bee stock, Magic Finish, Traditionally cut, and only 2,500 made.

I'll be sure to let everyone know when we have a release date, and in the meantime, those of you who've gotten early decks please feel free to chime in!

Playing Card Plethora / Westminster by Penguin Magic
« on: May 23, 2016, 01:17:27 PM »
Hey guys!  Many of you have probably seen peeks at our upcoming Westminster deck, designed by Phill Smith (who also designed the amazing DMC Black/Gold marked deck) if you read Penguin Magic Monthly or Card Culture.

Westminster will be released this Wednesday, May 25th, over at Penguin.

It has a custom back design inspired by the architecture of Westminster Abbey, rendered in metallic green ink.  Custom AOS and Jokers with a built-in reveal effect, pus a dupe card and a gaff.  Bicycle stock, magic finish, traditionally cut.  This is a semi-custom deck with mostly standard faces.

I've been beating up a deck for the past month, and it's still holding up really well. Best price on them will definitely be on Wednesday at launch time, so I wanted to give everyone a heads-up!  I've also attached a quick cell phone shot of the back design.

If you'd like a shot at winning a free deck, you can check out the contest we have running on Instagram right now under @penguincards

Thanks, and I hope you guys like the deck!

Kevin

I'd thought we had a topic on this, but I couldn't seem to find it.  (Don, please delete and/or merge if this post isn't needed)

But I wanted to share with you guys that the White Tally-Ho decks are finally available from Penguin Magic, and I'm happy to say they've been worth the wait.

Some of you have seen sneak peeks of these at conventions, or got your decks a few days ago if you're in Card Club.

We're offering a special discounted mixed brick (6 each of Fan and Circle) for just $79.95 today only.

Thanks everyone!

Hi everyone!  Many of you probably saw the sneak peek of the upcoming Penguin Decks in the 52+J convention thread.  We were able to get a small supply of decks sent down to Florida that arrived just days after they came off the presses!

I'm very happy to say that the first-ever deck produced by Penguin Magic, the Honeybee Deck, will be officially released on Tuesday the 27th over at penguinmagic.com

Here are a few bullet points about the print run:

-First Edition Printing of 2500 Decks
-Printed by the US Playing Card Company
-Bee Stock and Premium "Magic" Finish
-Traditionally Cut
-Designed by Randy Butterfield
-Custom Back, Tuck Box, Seal, Ace of Spades, and Jokers
-Custom Color Scheme and Background Pattern on the Court Cards
-2 Custom Double-Backer Gaff Cards Included

I've been using the same deck pretty much non-stop for the last 3 weeks, and they have held up beautifully, even against the humidity of Florida and NC!  USPCC did a great job with the production on them, and Randy did an absolutely amazing job with the artwork.  We also have a really fun preview video for them that will be on the website tomorrow - I'm thrilled with how it turned out!  I've attached a screenshot from the video to this post.

For all of you Instagram users - keep an eye out for posts from @instapenguinmagic and also the hashtag #penguinplayingcards

This is the first of many decks to come from Penguin, so I hope you all enjoy them!  :)

Thanks!

Kevin

Playing Card Plethora / Uncut sheets and TUCK sheets!
« on: May 22, 2012, 11:50:38 AM »
Hey guys!  Just wanted to give a heads-up that in about 10 minutes we'll be releasing Uncut Sheets over at HOPC.

In addition to the single card sheets, we'll also be offering some bundles so you can save.

We also have something really exciting - uncut TUCK BOX sheets for the NOC decks!

USPC prints 9 tucks on a sheet, but they actually do some mixing and matching when they do this.  So the Tuck sheets will be available as a 2-sheet set so you get all 5 colors.  One sheet has 3 colors, the other sheet has 2 colors.
