Title: Total Recall
Creator: Manuel Llaser
Publisher: Vernet
MSRP: $ 30
Skill Level: Advanced
DVD Run time: 80 minutes

Type of effect: deck memorization routine

Manufacturer's Write Up:
The spectator gives you a well shuffle deck of cards, you have never seen before, and after 30 seconds of memory effort and 200 neurons less you are able to name any card at any number given. The position in that deck of any card named. Also the position of any four of a kind given by the spectator Any sequence of consecutive cards memorize by a member of the audience, and at the end you can recite all the deck in order, or what its even better, gives the deck to the spectator as a present and he can call you any time he wants and you can recite the order for him.

How accurate is the ad copy?
This is an accurate depiction of what happens.

What's in the box?
A DVD

Key points:
No Mnemonics, Any shuffled deck, Any time, anywhere, Convince your audience of your super memory power. Bonus track: "How to recite the whole deck" Be able to remember the deck forever. The spectator can call you any time and you can recite the entire order of the deck. 100% audience tested

My thoughts:
This will take practice, a well rehearsed routine with patter and a lot of memorization. This trick is a masterpiece in Manuel's hands, because it is his baby. For you to be able to perform it like him is going to take the same effort he has given it.

Is it well made:
It's a Spanish speaking DVD, but since I don't speak Spanish, I have to listen to the dubbing which was extremely poor.

Is it well taught:
Based on the dubbing alone, the poor transcript read makes for a difficult learning experience, plus sitting though 80 minutes of it makes it extremely laborious.

How are the production values:
Moderate

Overall score:
7/10

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Your Card Is by Grant Maidment & Magic Tao
« on: February 01, 2015, 08:06:31 AM »
Title: Your Card Is
Creator: Grant Maidment
Publisher: Magic Tao
MSRP: $ 20
Skill Level: ALL
DVD Run time: 36 min

Type of effect: Color changing packet trick

Manufacture's Write up:
You have a card selected, signed, this then gets lost in the pack. You produce a set of four of the same cards i.e. - four Jokers. You show the backs to be all blue. One by one each joker turns face up from face down. You then place the four cards in the spectator's hand and ask them to wave their other hand over the cards. One card turns face down. You take the remaining three face up Jokers and show that they have now each turned into a different color back with the words "YOUR CARD IS" and an arrow written on the back of the cards. When the spectator turns the card in their hand, it is their signed card.

How accurate is the add copy?
Well, this effect as sold as "Your Card Is" with an extra effect "Chameleon Deception" but in truth... what comes in the box is the set up for the "Chameleon Deception" effect and it's the first effect taught on the DVD.

The title effect "Your Card Is" feels more like a climax ending you can stick onto the end of your favorite card effect using the "Chameleon Deception" cards, however to do THAT trick you'll need to write on your cards with a black sharpie marker and thus you won't be able to do "Chameleon Deception" anymore.

What's in the box?
A DVD and the needed Bicycle branded cards

My thoughts:
This is just a variation on Gary Freed's "NFW" - which is a variation on twisting the aces. In fact Magic Tao sells this same set up of cards and effect from Gary Jones called "Shock Twist."

Is it well made:
Cards are ordinary Bicycle stock

Is it well taught:
Yes it is

How are the production values:
Live performance and studio performance, shot with multiple angles in the Magic Tao studio

Overall score: 7/10

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Rubber Bang by Sean Yang
« on: January 31, 2015, 08:45:52 AM »
Title: Rubber Bang
Creator: Sean Yang
Publisher: Magic Soul
MSRP: $ 30
Skill Level:
DVD Run time: 2 hours

Type of effect: 9 tricks with rubber bands and cards

Manufacturer's Write Up:
With Rubber Bang, Sean Yang makes his magical DVD debut to teach you how to do all of this AND MORE. Each trick comes with complete step-by-step instructions, down to such basics as how to select rubber bands and perform a controlled shuffle, so that even the most novice magician will be able to pull these tricks out of his hat in no time flat. The DVD also includes mock performances by Sean Yang himself, so you can see each trick in the hands of an expert magician before putting it in to action on your own. No need to worry about coming up with a new performance script!

How accurate is the ad copy?
Very accurate, all skill levels and relatively easy to do (with some practice)

What's in the box?
DVD  and a small baggie of 5 rubber bands

Key points:
Rubber band magic is FAST and highly visual

Is it well made:
Two hours of instruction for 9 effects, plus they even give you rubber bands? I'd say they've given you as much as they can.

Is it well taught:
Hard to say since it's in Chinese, but the method portions are well shot (although in different camera angles the card faces "change" on you so pay attention). I'd say Sean did everything he could to make it appeal to a broad audience. But for me... 2 hours of silent teaching was difficult to sit through.

How are the production values:
Moderate. Nothing is under shot, but it can be a little cheesy in moments.

My thoughts:
Despite my negative comments, this is a great DVD with highly original effects. I think these tricks are fun to watch AND fun to perform and if you like rubber band magic - this is a MUST BUY for you.

Overall score:
8/10

I go over each trick on my video review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRHz-L2e4og

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Reaction by Rizki Nanda
« on: January 29, 2015, 08:14:14 AM »
Title: Reaction
Creator: Rizki Nanda
Publisher: Magic Tao
MSRP: $25
Skill Level: ALL
DVD Run time: 15 min

Type of effect: Flash reveal / ambitious card ending

Manufacturer's Write Up:
Imagine a spectator choosing any card in the deck, they sign the card on the face and you then lose it in the deck. Then you show the spectator a card with a cut out shape on it; you place it on top of the deck. In an instant the spectator's signed card appears through the cut out. Very visual, very easy to do. Enjoy performing 'REACTION'.

How accurate is the ad copy?
Very accurate, what they say happens, is what happens

What's in the box?
DVD and Reaction gimmick (in red or blue)

Key points:
It's versatile and is only limited by your imagination. You could make it a closing to an ambitious card trick, you could make it a color change or even a "I'm going to take you behind the scenes so you can watch the moment the magic happens" style effect.

My thoughts:
It's a fun effect that you could certainly get a lot of play out of. But I can't see someone doing this trick all their career long.

Is it well made:
It is well made, but it's not beyond you making your own,

Is it well taught:
The DVD has 15 minutes of instruction with a few ideas thrown in. I don't know what else they could have put in, but it did feel a little lacking.

How are the production values:
It's well shot in high definition in the Magic Tao studios.

Overall score:
6/10

Why did it get such a low score? Watch my video review to find out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HEPQsOIpn4

Title: Effortless Effects
Creator: Ryan Schlutz
Publisher: Big Blind Media
MSRP: $30
Skill Level: All
DVD Run time: each effect is taught with 10-15 minutes of instruction.

Type of effect: DVD of card magic

Manufactures Write Up:
Effortless Effects features seven full routines, all of which utilizes techniques that will absolutely decimate even knowledgeable magicians. So just IMAGINE how fooled normal spectators will be! There is no back tracking these effects, the methods are just too devious.

How accurate is the ad copy?
It's a little deceptive. The phrases "no sleight of hand" and "no sleights to worry about" is untrue in my opinion. Nothing is truly "effortless" and while this is a good DVD for a beginner in Magic, it will require practice and a few controls.

What's in the box?
A single DVD

Key points:
These are 7 very creative and DIFFERENT effects, in other words, you're not just getting variations on a single effect, you're getting 7 different tricks you could easily string into a routine.

My thoughts:
This is very enjoyable to watch, the magic is fun and I think there is something here for all skill levels.

Is it well taught:
Ryan spends a lot of time showing you the details of each effect. There is a lot of content on this DVD.

How are the production values:
Very well done. HD camera, multiple shots, attractive spectators and Ryan is entertaining to watch. (not to mention he has STAR WARS stuff on his bookshelf behind him!)

Overall score: 10/10

Title: Spaceshifter
Creator: Nicolas Lawrence
Publisher: SansMinds
MSRP: $25
Skill Level: ALL
DVD Run time: 39 min

Type of effect: Torn & Restored Card, with a twist

Manufacturer's Write Up:
Imagine getting your spectator to select a card and sign it. A corner of the card is torn off for the spectator to keep in one hand. Your spectator holds onto the card in the other hand. With a snap of the finger, the 'space' of the missing corner visually jumps to the center of the signed card. The corner your spectator is holding, also changes to fit into the 'space'.

How accurate is the ad copy?
Very accurate, this is exactly what happens

What's in the box?
A DVD

Key points:
Space Shifter is a piece of extremely visual eye candy. The visual is so strong, even perform with no presentation, spectators freak out every single time!

My thoughts:
It's a torn and restored that stays torn! It's a corner tear with a twist! I don't know how else to describe it, there's nothing else like it on the market!

Is it well taught:
Almost 40 minutes for a single effect? Yea, it's well taught. Every rock is overturned. "Herman" from Sansminds Magic walks you painstakingly every aspect of this effect

How are the production values: 39 minutes long, HD, nice background music and video effects, this is a well taught product.

Overall score: 8/10

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Cross by Agus Tjiu - REVIEW
« on: January 20, 2015, 07:59:39 PM »
Title: Cross
Creator: Agus Tjiu
Publisher: Self Published
MSRP: $40
Skill Level: ALL
DVD Run time: 5 minutes

Type of Trick: moving ink trick

Manufacture's Write up:
The spectator freely choose any random card, and signed it with a permanent marker. Then magician write on an "X" on the back of the signed card. Watch the "X" mark magically move to other spot. It happens inches away from you without cover or other funny business. After that you can give the card back to the spectators and leave them completely astonished!

How accurate is the ad copy?
Very honest - they basically list all of the things that it isn't, leaving out the one thing that it is. (but what is IT?)

In the Box
Instructional DVD
Gimmicks for both a red and blue deck

Key points:
The effect happens under the most minimal of cover - if any!

My thoughts:
Before I even knew how it worked, the gimmick "worked" on it's own when I was opening the box and it startled me. It looked like magic with no magician!

Is it well made:
Very well made, this is a very creative utility/gaff.

Is it well taught:
The DVD is only 5 minutes long and 2 minutes of the DVD is the performance. With the single camera shot explanation there is no audio track (there is however a repetitive loud music track that I muted) only English subtitles, but it's pretty straight forward. You're only being taught how to do the "move" any additional handlings or performance options are left to you to create.

How are the production values: Moderate

Overall score: 7/10

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Skyline from Danny Weiser & The Blue Crown
« on: January 13, 2015, 11:03:58 AM »
Effect: Skyline
Creator: Danny Weiser
Publisher: The Blue Crown
MSRP: $30
Skill Level: ALL
DVD Run time: 32 minutes

Type of effect: Torn and Restored Card

Manufacturer's Write Up:
Your spectator selects a card. You tear off the corner, show both sides of the remaining card, and then in the blink of an eye the card is magically restored!

What's in the box?
You get the DVD & you get the gimmicked card - and might I add, it is very creative, in all my years doing magic, I have never seen something like this. With that said, I highly doubt you could make your own, nor does Danny give you the instructions to.

Key Points:
Super easy-to-do, hyper visual and comes with multiple routine ideas

My Thoughts:
Skyline makes impossible magic easy. This is the perfect effect for the beginner magician who wants to look bad @$$ right away!

Is it well made:
The GAFF = YES!
The DVD = YES!

Is it well taught: Very well taught, Danny gives you lots of extras and ideas

How are the production values: really well done, exactly like what you'd expect from the blue crown

Overall score: 7/10

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Classifying Deck by Mago Granell - review
« on: January 11, 2015, 02:21:12 PM »
Effect: The Classifying Deck
Creator: Mago Granell
Publisher: Granell Magic Inc.
MSRP: $30
Skill Level: ALL
DVD Run time: 20 minutes

Type of effect: Card location

Manufacturer's Write Up:
With this deck you can cut the exact amount of cards you wish, from any fifty two positions with a zero margin of error. You can find the Aces or Kings from any place or any arrangement of the deck, it's magic. The deck can be examined by your spectators at any time and can also work as a regular deck.

What's in the box?
You get the gimmicked deck (which is true and not true, as you get a full 52 cards, but only a handful of them are gimmicked) and you get the DVD

Key Points:
Instructional DVD in Spanish and English + Well made gimmicked cards

My Thoughts
Mago has made it very simple for the most inexperienced performer to pull off these astounding effects of "card-sharkery." Although the method here is not new and a bit dissapointing.

Is it well made:
The deck = YES!
The DVD = I have to say not so much

Is it well taught: It's ok, I don't speak Spanish, so I have to go by the translation at the bottom of the screen.

How are the production values: 'Eh, not great. It's filmed like one of those old vintage VHS cassettes.

Overall score: 5/10

« on: January 10, 2015, 07:56:54 AM »
Title: Decode
Creator: Rizki Nanda
Publisher: World Magic Shop
MSRP: $38
Skill Level: ALL
DVD Run time:

Type of effect: Moving ink on card

Manufacturer's Write Up:
This is the most practical moving ink effect ever created. After the spectator has chosen a card you write down a random code, a sequence of dots, dashes or some sort of binary code onto the border of a playing card. With a simple flick or shake that code instantly morphs into the chosen card. The card is then examined by your spectator and can be kept as a souvenir.

What's in the box?
DVD and gimmick (either blue or red depending on your purchase preference)

Key Points:
This is an ingenious gimmick, you've never seen this before - guaranteed

My Thoughts:
This gimmick makes it beyond simple to perform this highly visual effect.

Is it well made: YES! But again, never seen anything like it, so I can't compare it to much.

Is it well taught: It's very well taught, although there is not much to it, it's a self-working effect that requires very little skill.

How are the production values: it's well shot and well marketed

Overall score: 7/10

Creator: Dario Capuozzo
Publisher: Titanas Magic
MSRP: $30
Skill Level: ALL
DVD Run time: 34 minutes

Type of effect: Torn and Restored Card

Manufacturer's Write Up:
Looking for the easiest, yet most visible and practical methods for a torn and restored card?  Dario Capuozzo has created an elegant solution to prior T&R's that you are going to love.

What's in the box?
Only the DVD you make everything else yourself

Key Points:
No magnets, no threads, no sticky tapes or glue.

My Thoughts:
This is the T&R you've been looking for all your career and it's the one I now do every time I perform.

Is it well made: YES! (well you make it, so its as good as you make it)

Is it well taught: It's very good, the unsigned routine is BETTER and more factual to the add copy than the signed version however, just an FYI

How are the production values: Dario is not an English speaker, so the entire DVD is silent with English subtitles, but it is filmed with excellent vantage points and is easy to follow.

Overall score: 10/10

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Mullica Card To Wallet - Review
« on: January 06, 2015, 04:16:35 PM »
Mullica Wallet
Creator: Tom Mullica & Heinz Minton
Publisher: Tom Mullica & Heinz Minton
MSRP: $80
Skill Level: ALL
DVD Run time: 5 minutes
Type of effect: Card to wallet

Manufacturer's Write Up:
A Spectator selects a card and the magician takes a wallet from either his pocket, or which has been lying on the table all time. Stating that the selected card will be found in this wallet the magician opens it. Inside he does not find the card but finds a smaller wallet. After opening this smaller wallet the selected card is found inside.

The wallet is made of a fine quality soft leather and special designed for this effect. Comes with written instructions and performance and instructions on DVD by Tom Mullica himself.

What's in the box?
You get the leather wallet (obviously and yes, it's real leather). You get written instructions and a playable DVD

Key points:
With this trick - no palming is necessary. No Forcing. And yes - the card can be signed - no extra cards! And best of all, when the performer returns the wallet to his pocket, it is ready to do again!

My thoughts:
This item is very well made and very professional looking. The Mullica wallet would make a great addition to anybody who performs table hopping, walk-around or restaurant magic.

Is it well made: YES!

Is it well taught: It's good - you only get the basics, there are not any alternate handlings or extras on the DVD at all.

How are the production values: 'Eh, kind of lackluster, it's a single shot in Tom's Las Vegas home, I think at one time his dog walks on camera.

Overall score: 10/10
