I like your thinking, but we've already used Rounders.  I'm trying to have completely unique battles, with a possible "March Madness"-style competition to find the best deck!  If you can find me another "unused opponent" to the FCJ deck, you let me know and I'll toss it up there.  Or John will, when he takes the reins back from me!

Now THIS is more like it!

Ghost vs Guardians
Wynns vs Ace Fulton's Casino

GvG is nice - but which Ghost, Black Ghost or "original" Ghost (white)?  Pick one and done.

I presume you're talking about the brown Wynn's vs. AFC?  It's an interesting idea, but the Wynn deck is more of a casino deck than a custom deck, to be honest.  I'll think about that one.

Vipers vs Deck One
Vintage 1800 vs Vintage Plaid
Arcane vs Steampunk
Artisans vs Sultan Republic

All excellent suggestions - except that Bicycle Steam Punk had a matchup already and LOST.  Was there another Steampunk you were referring to?  (Please don't say Reagan McClellan's Steampunks...)  Or perhaps something else to match against Arcane?

I was just thinking the theory11 steam punks, bronze or silver, but if its been done it doesn't matter.

I think the toughest one would be the sultans v artisans. Very similar decks, and about the same level of customisation.

Jerry nuggets vs Big gun.

There's a few inherent problems with this matchup, not the least of which being:

  • 1) Jerry's Nuggets are quite rare and expensive.  Many of the decks out there won't even be opened, lest they lose their aftermarket value.  As a result, only a few people here will have handled them.  I personally only touched one briefly at CARC about a month ago - just a quick pass through the deck, nothing more.
  • 2) Jerry's Nuggets are not a custom deck.  Like the Wynn's, they're a casino deck, though in this case one that ended up in the souvenir shop.

The modern custom playing card industry is generally considered to have started with the release of the Bicycle Black Tiger by Ellusionist.  Prior to that, none of these other "majors" were in the deck business - T11 was created by a former E employee, D&D weren't in the deck business, The Blue Crown and HOPC were glimmers in Alex's and Kevin's eyes and the Split Spades hadn't yet seen the light of day.

Were there custom decks before that?  Of course there were.  But that one release defined and changed the shape of the playing card market into what we all know and love today.  It wasn't even the first-ever "black deck", but it's the one that had the most market penetration at the time it came out, with the first printing selling out at light-speed; blink and you would have missed it.

I'm generally trying to use these criteria for setting up the match-ups:
  • 1) It has to fit in that post-Black-Tigers era.  If the deck is vintage, relatively few people will own it.
  • 2) It can't be a generally-available brand (such as standard-backed, standard-colored Aladdin, Bicycle, Bee, Tally Ho etc. without a single custom feature and ordered by the printer, not by an independent producer/designer).  Vintage Arrcos would be a no, but modern ones would be a yes.
  • 3) It has to be a genuine custom deck, as opposed to one designed for casino use.  I might allow the brown signature Wynn's because they sold at Theory11, but that's about it.  No Sands Casino, no Bally's, no Caesar's Palace, etc., canceled or uncanceled.
  • 4) I'm also trying to stay away from decks made specifically for magic.  A secret one-way back is permissible, and in a few cases (like Legends, Phoenix Apocalypse, the Jill Deck and Madison Players, to name a few) I'll allow marked cards, but most gimmick decks I'm leaving out.  The collecting community as a whole is less interested in them and there's way too many to keep track of.
  • 5) Lastly, and this is a loose criteria, it has to be a deck that's not so insanely rare and hard to find that almost no one will own one for comparison purposes.  This would include anything with an extremely low circulation, particularly if it's no longer available at retail prices.  White Centurions would fit the bill as too rare, while Gold Arcane wouldn't.  White Gold Seal New Fan Backs would be a borderline case, since they're slightly more rare than the White Cents but Zenneth Kok does still offer them for sale, including special discounted bundles he periodically releases.

Granted, John can go ahead and change these criteria to his heart's content when he returns - it's his board.  But that's what I'm using.

C'mon, guys - there's got to be more decks you want to see face off against each other.  Pick something "modern" (anything equal in age to or younger than Ellusionist's Bicycle Black Tigers) that's hasn't already faced off before.  Previous face-offs can be found here.

I would like to see this go to a NCAA-style playoff, though I'd probably make totally random pairings instead of using a branching system going from one tier to the next.  To do that, we need 32 winners - as of the end of Battle 15 (due to a tie in Battle 8) we'll have 16 winners so far.  Maybe I'll even talk with Alex about making a REAL prize for something, like coming closest to choosing the winners, random draw like this one for the final four, etc.

I'd choose them all myself, but some people have been complaining that no matter how old or new of a deck I pick, they don't have it!  Plus I really want you guys to feel invested in this, rooting for your favorites just like it was the NCAA.

I'm putting out a desperate call - WHAT DECKS DO YOU WANT TO SEE BATTLE?

I could easily pour through my collection coming up with match-ups, but many would be obscure enough that you'd be scratching your heads, especially the newbie collectors.  Tell me what you've got and what you want to see go at it, and I'll set up the fight card.

My match-up criteria are previously posted.  Summarized:
  • Made around or after Bicycle Black Tigers - no vintage.
  • Genuinely custom, not standard-issue.
  • Not insanely rare.
  • Not a casino deck.  Exception: if a magic/cardistry shop like T11 or Lee Asher sold it, I'll allow it.  Jerry's Nuggets STILL don't qualify, because they're vintage and insanely rare.
  • Not a magic-only type of deck: not gaffed, gimmicked, etc.
  • Not previously featured in a battle.

the 2 heritage series.

There were three Heritage Series sets - which two did you want to face off?  And technically it's called the Heritage Design Series.

So, just all four decks vs. all four decks?  Don't you think that might be a little boring?  The decks are pretty much as close to Bicycle-standard and identical as they get other than the back designs, which are historically-accurate copies of old Bicycle designs.  It's like comparing two identical books with different dust jackets.  On top of that, they're really more like in-house designs rather than custom designs.

What do you folks think?  Is this a match-up you'd find of interest?  Tell me you want it and I'll do it.

Artifice Tundra VS Silver Monarchs

Stranger & Stranger VS Bicycle Alchemy

Fathom VS Aqua Transducer

Dr. Leon VS Toto's Bar

Luxury Crown VS Aurum

Aristocrat Banknote VS Erdnase Acorn Back

Now THAT'S a set of fight cards, right there!  Awesome choices!  I just have to check on the age of the Dr. Leon deck - it's possible that it's too old to fit the criteria, and they are really hard to find.  I had a devil of a time finding mine.

Which Bicycle Alchemy did you want to compare Stranger and Stranger to?  There's two so far.  Perhaps both?

I like the Silver Monarchs vs. Artifice Tundra - but I already covered Monarchs as a whole.  Maybe I'll make a real head-to-head and compare them to Ghost.  I've been avoiding comparing two decks from the same producer, but it's bound to happen in the playoffs anyway, so why wait?

The Alchemy England seems most consistent with the art style.

You are correct.  I haven't done the Black Ghost deck yet, though...  And there has to be another black-and-white (mostly white) deck out there for this battle...

Again, I have to ask - Bicycle Alchemy 1977 version I or II - or both?

Whoop. Sorry. V2. (I forgot they were both called "England")

I think the more macabre style fits in better with the S&S deck.

I could find the yellow deck pretty easily. It's on Amazon.
For me, it was the black deck that was hard to find.

What I might do is pit the Ultimate (Stranger & Stranger) deck from D&D versus all four decks made by Anne Stokes under the Bicycle name.  What do you think?

EDIT: I just realized, MrMollusk - for your suggestion on the Aristocrats, I can't use them.  They're a standard USPC brand and not a custom-ordered or custom-designed deck.  Drat.

That'd actually be a pretty cool match. Considering the Stranger and Stranger deck had such a massive gradient of design, more themes from the Alchemy deck might balance the design levels out.

Huh. If that's the case, then the Banknotes are the classiest standard deck out there.  8)

Huh. If that's the case, then the Banknotes are the classiest standard deck out there.  8)

Pretty much!  There's actually a few different Banknote Backs for Aristocrat playing cards.  The brand was originally created by the American Banknote Company when they decided to get into the playing card business.  In short order, they were assimilated into the USPC collective's hive mind - apparently, resistance was futile!  :))  But you can tell by the fine detail work that the designer who created it likely had experience creating banknotes, stock certificates, etc. or at the least dreamed of doing so.  I forget the exact number of this back, but I think it's Banknote Back #3.  I've seen perhaps four different models of Banknote Backs.

The Aristo reprints are my deck of choice for poker night.

The middle one I can't do, at least not in this round - the Series 1800 decks have already competed in Battle 15, where they lost versus D&D's Vintage Plaids.  Maybe next time around.  The other two are pretty good.  By the way, the Stingers aren't technically out of print - we discovered that T11 is selling reprints.  The black deck can be found with markings stating it was printed in Erlanger when it was originally printed before the move from Cincinnati.  There's a topic about it in here somewhere.

Arrco Tahoe Reprints vs Aristocrat Banknotes

or

Steamboats vs D&D Vintage Plaid

At least for this round, I'm trying to stick to decks that are really custom and/or ordered from outside USPC.  The Tahoes are fine, but the Banknotes are straight USPC, not much different from Rider Back Bikes or Diamond Back Bees from the corner store in that sense.  Maybe on the next round.

The Vintage Plaids, as I mentioned in the previous post, have already won against the Bicycle Series 1800.  The D&D Steamboats lost to the Bee Erdnase 216.  The earlier reprints - were they done as an in-house project or did someone outside the company order them?

BTW: black Tally Ho, circle and fan backs, were ordered from outside USPC, so they're fair game!  Anyone want to pit something against them?  The Maeda Tally Ho decks also qualify, as do the pink and the orange ones.  But do bear in mind, I'm trying to target decks that have a decent likelihood of actually being in many people's collections - so that pale blue "gold edition" Maeda deck that costs a princely sum might be a poor choice.  The green "platinum edition" would be OK, because it's not as hard to obtain - even though it's not easy.  I only used S&M v1-3 because there's enough people here that may have packs of them.

Here, see what's gone on before.  When I hit thirty-two winners, I'm going to pool them and randomly set up a tournament elimination grid.

http://aethercards.com/discourse/deck-battles-%28alpha%29/score-sheet!/

EDIT - BIG IMPORTANT STUFF!
With the battles I have lined up for now, I need only TWO more to fill out this tournament's opening round!

When I have those last two battles done and dusted, simply suggest decks you want to see compete and I'll select at random which ones battle each other.  No more pairings, just a no-holds-barred free-for-all, chosen entirely at random.  I will permit ANY deck, even Bicycle Rider Backs or (shudder) Mavericks - but none of those counterfeit Bees, please!  I don't even consider them decks!

For vintage and other decks, I ask that you consider the deck's availability and distribution.  It's pointless to choose some obscure deck no one has heard of or few people own because, since they never heard of it/don't own it, it's more likely to lose.  Jerry's Nugget - fine; Joe Palomino's Casino and BBQ in Macau (and canceled, no less) - not so much.  Aristocrat 727 reprints - awesome; Broken Spell - too rare and too much of a head-scratcher; that cheaply-made souvenir deck from Billy Bob's Country Store in the Backwoods - no frackin' way.

In total, I'll need SIXTY-FOUR decks.  You can use some from the current tournament, but let's mix it up some more and get some that didn't compete yet.

I got the final round done.

I'm accepting submissions for the next tournament - individual decks only, as they will be paired at random with other decks.  Looking for a list of 64 decks in total, preferably at least some of which are not on the current tournament's roster.  I will accept nearly any deck - see my post prior to this one.

Part of the issue, though, was that some of the matches were too tailor-made, while some were too obscure - like the Dr. Leon vs. Toto's Bar fight which I believe YOU suggested!  I figure the way to truly rank a deck against its peers is to set the matches up totally at random, where you can have a top-seed deck go against another top seed, a totally left-field choice or anything in-between.  While it's possible there will be a number of utter blow-outs, totally lop-sided defeats, it's also possible that a long-shot will defeat a supposed favorite because the match-up wasn't tailor made.

Once I get my 32 winners for THIS round of matches, it would end up random like that anyway - it becomes too tough to match the decks with some like characteristics because of the variety of match-ups that led to the second round of the tournament.

I figure there will be 31 matches, taking roughly 2 months to complete unless I step up the schedule for the tourney.  Or people will simply get bored, I'll kill the tourney and just go back to whatever match-ups people want to see.

I was considering actually offering a real prize for the person who predicted the most number of match outcomes IN ADVANCE.  I have a Black Widow gimmick, hardly used, that I could offer - I tried selling it but without any takers.  Blasted thing wasn't cheap, either - new I think it was $250.  Tannen's sells them and has a video up on how it looks in action.  It's well made, but I have thick forearms and it uses an elastic sleeve to fit over the arm - it tends to slide off of my arm at inconvenient times, so I never got very good at it.

If I were to do that, I'd post a "tournament tree" just like for the NCAA with all 32 choices to date, then set a deadline to pick either all the match-ups or just to do them a round at a time.

C'mon, the Toto VS Leon wasn't TOO obscure.
But the random match ups could result in some really interesting or surprising results. It'll be groovy.
I also have some decks lying around I'd be willing to donate. (Legends and Albino Dragon Cthulhu). Maybe some other retailers could sponsor it.

"Wasn't TOO obscure?"  Two decks normally only available in Japan?  And not terribly common in deck retailers' stock, either.  The contest got all of three votes - two of which were from board staff!  :))

If you want to donate them, that sounds great - but rather than sending them to me, it makes more sense to send them to whoever wins them, don't you think?  We can stipulate that they have to pay postage to claim their prizes.  If you want to commit them to the contest, just say the word and give full descriptions - new/opened, color, etc.

I was out of town, so I couldn't vote.  :( But I think they're 2 decks that more people should know about. They're phenomenal.

But yeah. I have a Limited Green Albino Dragon Cthulhu Deck and a Red Legends deck I'd be willing to donate. Both unopened. Once the winner is announced, I'll ship em out.

"Should know about" and "actually know about" are two different things!  If they don't know the deck, they can have a hard time rating it.  Worse if they don't know either deck.

Thanks for the prize - when the tournament is ready, I'll announce it.  Prize will go to the person who chooses the most contests correctly, random choice among those if there's a tie.  Submission in advance.  I'll set a deadline date for the choices once the "tree" for the tourney has been set.

For the next go-around, I'm just taking single decks/sets rather than complete match-ups, so the pairings will be random.  I could put those decks in, but if not many people actually own them, they might not stand a good chance.  Then again, I thought the same thing about the Ultimate deck - I think at least half the people that voted for it don't even own it!

I'm still awaiting submissions from the lot of you for what decks you want to see go head-to-head in the next tournament.  I'll probably go big for that one - 128 decks, no holds barred, any deck type you want.  (Just don't be surprised if your obscure art deck or uber-rare vintage pack no one's heard of loses...  :)) )

By the end of this tournament, I'm going to take your choices and combine them with whatever I have lying around in my collection that I feel like tossing in - so don't delay getting your picks on deck.  (Get it - "on deck"?  :))  Thanks, I'm here 'til Sunday, try the brisket!)

DON'T list them in "match-ups" - this one's being handled "blender-style", totally random.  Jerry's Nugget could face off against Bicycle Green Trace...  (yeesh...)  Post your choices here.

I can include both decks, but the match-ups will be random this time.  Could be Steamboats vs. Mavericks that have been left in the rain...  :))

I might take Mavericks left in the rain over new ones.. Mavericks are about as useful as toilet paper.  If they were left in the rain you can at least have moist towelettes. :)

You mean BLACK Tigers, right?  'Cause I don't know of a White Tigers deck, unless it has something to do with Detroit...

Oops. I was thinking of Eric Duan's decks and the Black Tigers at the same time.

The Rosefinch, Warrior, Oriduru, and Kite & Puppet decks should also probably be up there.

I'm a little confused.  Oriduru was a Bicycle Transducer deck by k3 Studio, not Eric Duan.  "Warrior" refers to which "Warrior" deck?  A few decks have "Warrior" in the title.

Perhaps because no one requested them before?  I think we did have Tendril in the first competition - but I think it was eliminated before making it to the tournament.

Marc Jacobs Deck
Call of the Cuthulu by Albino Dragon
War of Currents Deck
Cigar 808 Deck
Pippoglyph Deck
Johnny Cupcakes V1&V2
Vanda Decks
The Virts Deck

Yeah. I was just shotgunning ideas. The recent transducers look strikingly similar to Eric Duan's Puppet & Kite decks, imo.

And I meant the Black Warrior deck.

People will generally suggest decks that they're either familiar with or own.

Red vs. blue Rider Backs...  Well, since I'm taking decks without pre-matching them, I could always toss them in, but I'd probably do both colors together, since they're really the same deck...

Shotgun away.  I need a long list.  I might even go for 128 decks instead of 64 this time out.

Blue Blood vs JAQK.

Should be a very interesting match up as they are both heavyweights in terms of customisation and elegance; but have just enough differences for people to prefer one over the other.

Another battle idea,
Battle of the Discourse Designers. Paul, Randy, Jackson, 4pm, Uusi. I know there are a few more. This would be designers that have a finished card project. Step one could be to vote for the top deck of each designer, Take the winning decks of each for the final battle.

Maybe it has already been done, but White Ghosts vs Shadowmasters?
Starting to get better...have to stay dedicated...can't lose any more cards in the middle of a trick.  Literally, completely lost a card.

So... something similar to the designer series I did a few months ago?

Ill have to check if it's been done, but it sounds like it would be a good battle :)

Ultra gaff vs the gaff system.
Or
Carnival deck vs Fast n Genious

Base the battle on the gaffs usage and design rather than how they handle.

Another battle could be medallions vs red monarchs?

Chat with Tom and Lee about doing a few vintage-vs.-modern battles!  Try going for some classic modern designs when comparing, so you're comparing apples to apples and not meteorites.

Not sure this is still current, but I recon a battle between WhiteKuckles and Jones Playing Cards would be interesting.  I'm barracking for Jones Playing Cards although the Wk's with their 'wisdom' being older might put up a good fight.

It's not current any longer - the last post before yours was over 30 months ago.  You do pose an interesting match-up, though.  I was curious about the Jones cards, but now that I've seen this image you uploaded, I can see they're a modified version of the WhiteKnuckle faces - not surprising as they have the same artist.

FYI: it's "reckon," not "recon" - two totally different words!  And what is "barracking," exactly?  Can't tell if it has to do with Barack Obama or military barracks...  :))

Thanks for the reply.  I'm Australian so we have different spelling and barracking might be an Aussie term too.  It is like backing/rooting/supporting enthusiastically/beating on etc.

The Jones Playing Cards are much more than a revamp.  They are apparently as the designer intended the WKs to be.  I admit to have inside info as I have become his studio manager and have gotten to know the whole design story pretty well!

You should post the story, then!  We should have an old topic on the Jones deck and I know we have at least one old topic on the WhiteKnuckles.  I guarantee people here will want to know the tale!

In fact, if you're willing to write an article about them, I'd be willing to publish it in the 52 Plus Joker Club's monthly magazine, CARD CULTURE.  I'm the editor.  We have a print quarterly as well, Clear the Decks, but CtD focuses more on antique decks while CC covers modern and vintage better.

How interesting Don.http://www.playingcardforum.com/Smileys/aaron/smiley.gif  That would be an interesting project.  How many words are we talking?  Layout?  Images? We are rather busy preparing for an exhibition where the cards feature boldly.  But we could certainly do that.  Brett actually has his own annual magazine.  The forth one just came out and the decks are introduced in this one.  So we are used to writing and deadlines.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Morning Don,

Could we communicate via email regarding an article in Card Culture?  How does it work on forums giving out personal emails?  You could visit the website and an email address is found there. (www.seaofpain.com).  I did look on the 52 Plus Joker site for your name but didn't find it.  I have printed off the special edition and we will have a read to get a feel for the style.  A plan is formulating!

Cheers
