Title: Seasons Playing Cards - SOLD OUT!
Post by: CBJ on October 27, 2011, 01:55:31 PM
Hello all,

The Seasons decks were originally going to be sold/funded through Kickstarter, but as some of you are aware... this is not the case anymore.

I've been informed that a deal has been struck with fullboatdealer and AceKing to be EXCLUSIVE distributors of the Seasons decks.

More info soon.

I heard this is the first and last deck from Alex Chin, which is unfortunate.

I am honestly not a fan of the fact that he teamed up with resellers. His pricing was going to include free shipping when he was going at it solo. I doubt AceKing or FBD would go with that model.

I'm picking up a set of them from Alex himself if he ends up selling the cards on his personal site - they are pretty cool and supporting a fellow artist is a must.

Beautiful Decks, are they close to completion or being released soon?
Title: Re: Seasons Playing Cards - Update
Post by: sinsandman on October 27, 2011, 05:37:09 PM
I have since gotten over this, but....I am with Alex. I was way excited about the Kickstarter on this one and he pulled it like 3 days from launch (don't quote me on exact date). I felt like I had just gotten screwed out of the chance to pay what they are worth and without shipping. These guys are resellers, come on now. I'm a reseller, I know how this works lol. I still feel like we have gotten the short end of the stick, but like I said, it is what it is.

I was pissed about that too but these cards look too nice to let go.

Post by: sinsandman on October 27, 2011, 05:47:09 PM
Oh for sure, Ev. I still want to get a couple sets, I am just a little bitter that I will now be forced to be gouged in order to get some. I also like KS for first projects because it makes me feel like I actually helped the deck in some fashion. Getting stuck having to go external to buy a deck doesn't leave me feeling anything but, "There goes another $40 I could have spent in gas or food" lol

This deck design is pretty enough that for me, I don't care where or how they decide to sell it. I just want a set, at any halfway reasonable cost really. Sure hope they become available soon!
Title: Re: Seasons Playing Cards - Update
Post by: phantom1412 on October 27, 2011, 07:39:29 PM
I'll definitely buy it.
But I remember they announced that they won't use kickstarter, but ebay to sell it.
Title: Re: Seasons Playing Cards - Update
Post by: sinsandman on October 27, 2011, 07:42:59 PM
Indeed, Phantom. That fact was covered in the original post, thus striking the rest of the posts to follow and people voicing how they are a little let down by the kickstarter not happening. It is like they sold their soul to the devil in hopes of making an extra penny, as opposed to putting in the hard work that follows simply designing a stellar deck.

How can you not buy these cards? I havent heard a single person say that they don't like them. And I think they're gonna have Aristocrat Stock and Magic Finish! Just like the Vortex deck.

Who said they were not going to buy them? Maybe it was a rhetorical question that I took as an actual question? Anyway, I fully intend on buying 2 sets...one for show and one for tell (get it?). I am just not happy about the way I am going to have to go about getting these. They claim the reasons for their actions is to get the decks to us quicker....fishy if ya ask me

it does seem fishy but i do know that aceking packs them well and better then some main sites i get decks through so i am good for that. i will try to get a brick when i can depending on price. i am trying to get more of a deck so i can do youtube contest and stuff. and for my collection also.

I am sure Aceking does just fine. I have almost bought from them many a time, just have never done so. It is not a problem with the actual resellers, that I have. It is merely a let down of expectations. I had my sights and hopes set on the Seasons deck when I first caught wind of them...I have all but let them go now, due to the extreme disappointment of no KS and the lack of disappointment by Aether.

Guess there won't be any uncut sheets for sale? Or do the Ebay sellers sell that as well?
Title: Re: Seasons Playing Cards - Update
Post by: sinsandman on October 28, 2011, 09:50:05 AM
That is actually a good question. It would be even more disappointing if they don't do uncuts. However, I really don't see a reason for them not to do so. I remember seeing somewhere that they were selling art prints. This deck is very elegant and artsy, so they would be fool not release uncuts. I don't see them bein cheap though.

They are $15 a set, which is cheaper than this vortex deck. I don't think they are expensive.

That's actually not a bad price, makes 2 sets (4 Decks) affordable. Where did you Get the prices?
Title: Re: Seasons Playing Cards - Update

I'll definitely be saving up for a ton of these
Title: Re: Seasons Playing Cards - Update
Post by: sinsandman on October 28, 2011, 03:01:14 PM
I thought that I read somewhere that they would be $20 for a set. Maybe I read wrong or am I am just remembering incorrectly. Either way, the fact they are being sold by resellers means that those resellers can set the price at whatever they want. I doubt they will be selling them for free and doubt further they will be offering the free shipping we would have received through KS.

How long do you think it will take for them to sell out?
Title: Re: Seasons Playing Cards - Update
Post by: sinsandman on October 28, 2011, 03:41:03 PM
I honestly don't think they will sell out all that quickly...maybe even a week before they sell out, because they are not getting as much hype as they were when they were going to be on KS
Title: Re: Seasons Playing Cards - Update
Post by: phantom1412 on October 28, 2011, 08:44:11 PM
I thought I saw on Facebook about the price.
And there is not much hype about this deck, which actually this is the most beautiful deck released by someone who isn't from magic company.

I'm waiting for the release of the decks.

Mana is great too, but since it's the deck for a magician called Mana, so my interest go down a little.

Its not "for" Erik Mana. Its made by him. And also, thats not the name of the deck, its the name of the company

It's made by him and for him. I meant it's like this is his mark, and I don't like carrying decks with someone's name that I don't know. (No offense to Erik Mana)

The deck has a lot more meaning than just a name, you should follow its development. In addition, anyone who does not get the Mana deck when it comes out would be fool...my own opinion. But if we want to further discuss the Mana I will make a topic on it so that we may keep this one about the Seasons deck.

Seasons (Primavera + Seronda) decks news:
"For those following, there have been some slight changes to the deck. The first is that there will be a metallic gold used for both the decks rather than a silver/gold combination. It was logically more consistent and after seeing the gold on black you'll see why. Also, the court cards are not traditionally inverted. Due to the shaded nature of the court cards, black facing the deck seemed a bit questionable so we maintained the same court color scheme from Primavera to Seronda which I think does look pop better IMO (easier too). Our designs are being sent to the USPCC as we speak. Pictures will be available later tonight."

Hmm, this will still be made internationally available, right? I sure hope so! Also, it's a bit of a bummer that it's being sold on eBay. It usually means that the shipping over to New Zealand is about the same price as the cards themselves.

Where did he find that picture of my Grandma.

You're my grandson? Which one? I forget. Not that it matters though, you're all spoiled brats, always asking for money. Why, back in my day, we didn't even have money! We all just played with rocks, and we were grateful.

Love the King of Hearts design, the combination of red, white and gold is absolutely stunning.

Also, what's with the KoH's eyes? His left eye on top is red, while on the bottom it's white. Could this possibly be an extremely tiny reveal, or is this just to go with the "split personality" theme?

I doubt Mike will pick them up, that would be a terrible move on his part. FBD and AceKing are just as good for playing cards.

The Vortex deck won't be available on BMPW either, but it will be in AceKing's shop. Personally speaking, AK has the absolute best customer service on eBay. The two times I got an order where the decks were slightly damaged, he sent me replacements the following day. Also, the guy sponsored my YouTube channel for a couple months - so you know he's good. :P

can't wait for this deck to be released! love the design! on top of that, metallic ink, colour contrast, customised faces etc. but if they do sell through ebay only it'll be a bit of a hassle, due to navigation and stuff.. but then there's aceking which covers it up, hope the price's reasonable for international buyers, especially the shipping price!!! still cant wait to get them though, it'll be like the arcane pair haha

Pictures will be available later tonight.

These cards really look awesome.  I'm itching to buy - and I need to buy some extra for a trade, to boot!

@Danktrees promo code?? You should post that in the promo code thread at the top of the fourm!!

SO HOW MANY OF THIS DECK ARE Y'ALL GETTING?

They said that on their Facebook page.
The promo code is "ESS20"

Post this in the topic on coupon codes!

Did something happen to the back designs? They look... emptier. Is it just me?

is there less gold maybe? im seeing the same thing as you, but idk what it is.

I think it's also a bit different seeing them on an uncut sheet - all the trim that gets removed before they become cards is still there, making large gaps between individual cards' back art.

Post by: dmbaggs on January 25, 2012, 03:10:48 AM
So I went back and looked at the pictures they have posted on their facebook and noticed a few things.

First of all there is very little gold on the backs. It's mostly black, white and shades in between. There is a little gold in the middle of each back. This is true on both the white and black decks. You can check those pictures out here... (LINK) (http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=pu.128045753959402&type=1)

Also this gold is printed in metallic ink so in the new picture you see a little less because of the glare on the top half of the uncuts. If you look at the bottom uncut you can see it better.

Hey guys,

First off I just wanted to say that Alex, your gif is HILARIOUS. The cheek in the expression made my day lol.

Anyhow I'm glad you guys are pumped. I am too. In case you guys were wondering this deck was NEVER supposed to have metallic inks. It was a last minute decision to add them in when I began creating the custom court cards. I understand that the "cool thing" now is to have shiny inks and ridiculous tuck cases. Those things are something I enjoy as well, but use them sparingly. A slight hint of gold tints the back and the suits. The only place where the gold really flaunts itself is on the court cards.  Even though we are outsourcing and paying another production plant to produce our tuck cases, discretion is used even on the boxes to remain quite minimal with tasteful uses of gold and embossing.

I do apologize for anyone that was expecting fireworks in a bottle, but this deck had to be perfect - and to me gaudiness was not perfect. Maybe that's just the architect in me. MORE WHITE! If you guys want more gold, I hear there's a deck called the Monarch? Just kidding.

Anyhow it does seem to bring me to my next point. It seems that people are assuming that those are uncut prints of the actual cards. They are actually uncut proofs. Normally proofs are cut before sent. Since it requires two different factories to create our decks, the USPCC sent an uncut sheet because they had no box to put it in. I guess this makes it super rare huh? :)

We do ideally look forward to starting production by week's end. More waiting? Yeah I feel ya. But quality takes time. For the record if it does make you feel any better apparently the USPCC said that in their entire existence of business, this deck has literally taken more hours than any other deck has ever taken to produce and is also their most detailed deck to date. In fact they were beginning to get a little "irritated" with me at how "perfect" I needed things to be. True story. So please be patient. You guys have been there since the beginning. Hang on just a little bit longer to stay with us 'til the end.

-Chin

It's always nice to get a little update! Thanks Chin! I think I can speak for all of us when I say "this one is gonna be worth the wait". You're attention to detail has really propelled this deck. I know that I'm eager to get my hands on this one, but I know being patient will only make the deck that much better.

Hopefully all the stuff goes smoothly and you end up happy with the final product!

All the best,
 Baggs

Yeah sorry about that. I've been meaning to be more part of these forums but I'm also launching a tea business. If you thought launching a deck of cards was hard, wait until you have to deal with the Illinois Department of Health, Fair Trade Certifications, Organic Certifications, and government departments in general.

Glad you enjoyed it, though it doesn't even start to describe how AMAZING the quality in this design is. If I had to pick a deck to put in a fancy display, yours wouldn't even have any sort of competition. Will uncuts be available as well? I'm not usually a big fan of those, but I'd be more than happy to make an exception here.

And as Baggs has already mentionned, do let us know about the tea business as well. I might buy some of that, too. ;)

It's drawing attention, but those uncuts are uncut proofs, not normal uncut sheets.  The deck hasn't gone to production yet; it's still in the pre-production phase, from the looks of things.  Read IAmTheChin's post on this a few posts back on this topic.

But Seasons Playing Cards posted a pic with this note
"Why do the colors look like that? Wait, that's not a card. It's a metal sheet from the factory"

That's awesome news!! The metal plates makes sense. I have many of those from big news stories. I have a friend who works in the printing part of my local newspaper (The Oregonian) and if I ask him for a plate he usually can get it for me! They really are awesome. I'd be guessing it's similar to those used for cards.

I don't think it would be that easy for them to do. There is more of a process they have to go through and USPCC plates might not fit other companies machines. Although I don't know any of that for a fact.

Cool picture! Thanks for sharing that. It's always cool to see some of those pictures showing the history of cards and how far they've come. I'd be guessing that USPCC keeps the plates in some sort of vault (on file). I doubt theyd give them away, sell them, or get rid of them.

USPC would keep the plates, I imagine - if it was their design and product.  But Seasons is just a job for them.

I would wager there's more to making a deck with another company than simply handing them the old plates.  For one, those plates don't last forever - they get worn as they're used, losing their image sharpness.

People already collect printing plates and assorted print-related artifacts, but they're more into printing memorabilia than playing card memorabilia.

I saw a girl one evening on a bus in Manhattan - she'd just finished her first day as an intern for the New York Times and she was given the plate used to print the front page of that day's edition as a gift.  It was cool-looking and VERY thin.  Modern plates like the Seasons deck plate we saw are actually rather delicate and can be easily damaged without proper care.  Now, imagine having something the size of an uncut sheet, but you can't really roll it up...

I have quite a few of those plates from my local newspaper and they aren't that hard to store. They have a hole at the top that I am assuming is used in part of the machine, but it makes for a great hole to hang it from a nail. If you don't want to hang it up they can easily be put into a bag of some sort and stored most any place.

Helllooo,

Back from the grave been unfortunately occupied. To answer questions basically the plate is pretty thin aluminum. You certainly won't be rolling it up anytime soon. It's customary for the factories to keep the plates more of as a policy thing than anything really. Really can't be giving those metal plates out, sorry lol.

Having said that, any deck that has an outsourced item (such as Bee stock or custom tuck cases) from another factory takes 6 weeks to produce making the projected launch in March. It wouldn't be a SEASONS set if it didn't take more than one season hahaha...sigh.

I've heard that they will be sold on Ebay through Fullboatdealer and some other Ebay dealer, but on their facebook page they in replying on one of the comments said that they would like to sell them "through the website". Which website do they mean? I've tried searching for a "Seasons playing cards website" or something similar and found nothing. Can someone help me? I'd be guessing Seasonsplayingcards.com or something like that

And you'd be guessing right; try it for yourself. :P

The site is empty for now, so it's no big deal, but now we know the domain is registered. ;)

Well there ya have it! Good on ya Moon :) Quick question... Is Seasons based in the states? I'm hoping that shipping won't be insane like the Mana decks were

I actually believe this isn't a US based organization again. I don't think the designer, Alex (was it Alex...or some other name?) Chin, resides in the states. But hopefully from the Mana deck, he'll learn that it's better to have the products shipped from a warehouse in the US instead of shipping to his place and out again.

Well, unfortunately, the second-biggest region for playing cards outside the US is Asia.  Kevin mentioned they sell far more heavily in Asia/Oceania than in Europe.  It's possible he'll bring the deck home (somewhere in Asia/Oceania) and sell it straight from there, just like Mana and Skulkor.  It would boost the deck's popularity with the home market, probably making it sell even better there than here.  It's what other non-US residents have been dealing with ordering USPC-made decks for a long time; I guess it's our turn to feel a little of the pain.

Maybe he could do a 50-50? Keep half of the stock with some retailer here. It'll certainly attract, or not turn down, some US/Canada buyers.

On a side note, I've noticed it many times. Many, including yourself Don, should be aware that it's USPCC, not USPC.

Alex is from Illinois as far as I know. At least that's what his Facebook says. I do know that Fullboatdealer is going to be selling Seasons decks so there will be a US source for getting them.

The asian market is huge though, that's true. A huge portion of my Kickstarter backers are from that region of the world. I wouldn't be surprised if more than half my total are from outside the US.

Okay that's good to know! Thanks Xmetal! I was worried that the shipping prices would be insane  ??? Even with the coupon code haha. It's good to know that there will be a U.S. retailer for these. I'm loving the decks and I would hate to have to pass on them because of shipping

On a side note, I've noticed it many times. Many, including yourself Don, should be aware that it's USPCC, not USPC.

Actually, the company uses USPC a lot more often than USPCC.  Here are some quotes from the company's history on bicyclecards.com:

"Also during the war, USPC provided "spotter" cards, which illustrated the characteristic shapes of tanks, ships and aircraft from the more powerful countries."

"USPC shipped thousands of the requested decks gratis to our troops in Vietnam."

"In 1987, USPC acquired Arrco Playing Card Company, the third largest playing card manufacturer in the country. International Playing Card Company, a Canadian subsidiary of USPC since 1914, maintained its own manufacturing operation from 1928 to 1991."

There are several more examples on that page of the US Playing Card Company referring to itself as USPC.

I suspect that it's part of the corporate culture brought to the company by the present owner, Jarden.  Here's the "signature" of the Director of Sales from an email exchange we had last year:

Bill Schildman
Director, Sales
Jarden Leisure & Entertainment Group
US Playing Card Division
300 Gap Way
Erlanger, KY 41018

Jarden, at least internally, refers to the company as the "US Playing Card Division" rather than as a separate company, so the corporate use of their abbreviation probably leaves out the second C for the same reason.  They probably leave it on the boxes for much the same reason they leave "NY Consolidated" or "A. Dougherty" on their respective Aces - tradition.

So, back to the topic - I'm glad to hear that Alex Chin is US-based.  This increases the chances that US buyers will be paying only domestic shipping rates, unlike the other decks we all know about.  I'll be ordering from the source rather than Fullboatdealer, since the coupon code for the source site looks sweeter than any discount Fullboat will offer.

It was a question, I was wondering how you didn`t know that? The side of almost every USPCC deck says "The United States Playing Card Co." So I was wondering how you never seen that. :)

That's exactly what I don't understand.

The reason why I thought the abbreviation is USPCC is exactly for the United States Playing Card Co.(-mpany) on the side, or bottom of the box.

I'm not sure what you're doubting me here.

Ya I have noticed that sometimes, Canada post is retarded for prices, it is like $7 for one deck from the US and $10 in Canada. The only advantage in canada is it gets to you faster (most times).

Also it doesn't really matter if it's USPCC or USPC. I always say USPCC, but some use the other abbreviation. In the end we all get the same idea  ::)

So we're all agreed - whether one writes USPC or USPCC, it's the same company we all know and love/hate, and Canada Post is screwed up when it comes to domestic delivery.

@xZEROx: is that three CALENDAR days, or three BUSINESS days?  It makes a difference.  Isn't Canada Post closed all weekend long every week?  Were there any recent national holidays?

AceKing and Fullboatdealer will both have a chunk of decks, but ONLY DECKS!

...as in no uncut sheets, right?  Or are there more products I'm not aware of?

And will they be selling the decks in matched pairs?  I recall Alex Chin stating somewhere that they'll be sold only as matched pairs, like the War Series "Big Gun" reprint was before it went into closeout.

They gave out the code to anyone who "liked" their Facebook page, and it's only going to be valid on their own now-unfinished website.  20% is one of the sweeter discounts around, eh?

I didn't catch the price (or just forgot it) but if the set is $20, then YES, the set after discount would be $16!  A steal indeed!

$8 a deck is a huge deal. I'd pay $12 each for those and not feel bad about it. I have to admit I don't think I'll be that generous with the discounts, 20% off to anyone (and by default it becomes almost everyone that can google) is a huge discount. :)

The site isn't "gone", per se.  They made the home screen a big blank field of white.  If it was truly gone, some cybersquatter would be on it with cheesy advertising "search results" or something.

"Stronger"?  Like, my server can beat up your server?  :))

Any company can pony up extra cash to rent extra server capacity in times of need.  E crashed for Red Artifice because they had some insane multiple above their previous record for number of hits, something they neither expected nor planned for.  Trying to sell products on a crashed website makes no one happy - I'm hoping Mr. Chin sees the potential for this and compensates accordingly.

No retailer wants a customer to end up shut out.  No retailer wants customers to get pissed off at missing out on a great product at the original retail price, leaving them forced to pay aftermarket prices if they still want (and can afford) them.

Lack of server capacity in a time of need is a great formula for bad PR.  The old saying about how there is no such thing as bad publicity is totally wrong in this instance.  Many people remember the E sale of the Red Artifice deck as "the Red Artifice disaster".  You can make up for bad PR over time, but some people will hold a grudge and it's simply better to avoid bad PR in the first place.

don is absolutely right in what he said. server crashes are annoying and frustrating to customers. the only thing that saved E was that they went out of their way to make sure that, if the customers were listening, they informed everyone what was going on almost every half hour.

and customers definitely hold grudges; i will never buy a devo product cause he's a douche, and i have yet to buy anything from t11 since that whole shindig went down

Bad as that was, Mana did issue many people partial refunds on the shipping costs when they found a less expensive way to ship.  Handlordz had a shipping quote meltdown with their new releases, but they, too, are giving out refunds of the overcharges.

Biggest issue with Mana (and Skulkor, which you don't hear much about these days) was that they were shipping from Asia.  It seems silly, when the deck is made in the US, to ship all of it to Asia only to ship it back to American buyers at great cost, when simply leaving some with a US fulfillment company would have made them affordable for both the US and Asian markets.  Since I believe this deck is being made and shipping from the US, the only potential problem is quote glitches like Handlordz had this weekend, something that's easily resolved.

We've got official word back from the USPCC. The Seronda deck will be printed on Friday and the Primavera deck will be printed on Monday. The tuck cases look gorgeous and we're very glad the machines handled the detail well. We've been told that the very latest they'll be fully packed by is the 9th. Since our distribution facility is literally next door to the USPCC it seems like it won't be too long now.

And for the question when they will go on sale they said :

Hey guys,

Sorry for the absence. To catch you guys up on things. Had a bit of a debacle with a domain name so try to get your info from the fan page for the moment.

Also scrapped my old web page and started building a new one that can hopefully be easier for international shipping which is my biggest concern. If anyone has experience with it please let me know. Tubes will be shipped separately than the sets (which is where the shipping confusion comes in). If you buy multiple sheets up to 4 sheets can fit in one tube I believe.

The uncut sheets will be sold both separately and in a bundle. Buy the bundle and get a free set. The cards themselves won't be sold separately though for consistency of the sets. Makes sense, but some people wanted more of one than another and thought it should be clarified.

As far as the early supporter discount, after doing some number crunching we can only apply it to a certain number of decks related in bundles. All other items of a cart can have the 20% off, but to be perfectly honest, I really didn't expect these cards to cost this much and can't afford to sell them at $16 a pop. Other card printers out there can verify this especially with the embossing/foiling costs. They'll be kept at $19.95 a pair which I do think is reasonable. Again all other store items will still respect the Early Supporter code.

As for tribute to the rock'em sock'em community I have a tuck proof picture for you guys to see first from the factory. Minimal and elegant like the seasons. Look close and you can see the embossing. Pretty happy with it. Can't wait to have it in person.

-Chin

As for tribute to the rock'em sock'em community I have a tuck proof picture for you guys to see first from the factory. Minimal and elegant like the seasons. Look close and you can see the embossing. Pretty happy with it. Can't wait to have it in person.

Wow Alex, great news, and thx for the update!

Anyone know if somebody besides AceKing and Fullboatdealer will be selling these?
I don't know but their will surely be BMPokerWorld and other members of these forums. Anyways, why not buy them directly (for cheaper and receive them sooner)?

It makes a lot more sense to get them from the source than from an aftermarket seller.  Make no mistake - this is a highly anticipated deck and I believe it will sell out in a day or less.  By the time BMPW and the others get it, it'll be a good percentage above MSRP.

I agree with Don. The white deck has already been printed and the black one is printing tuesday I think, so a late April release or early May release looks about right.

These will be selling for 20$ a pair.
Originally they were supposed to be selling at:

but the site has been temporarily closed to the public so I am unsure now.

I think $20 per set is an amazing price.

These are by far the nicest decks I've seen, I can't wait to add them to the collection.

I look forward to seeing the other 2 decks in the series!

in singapore we have one season only, hot  :( oh wait, three.. rain, hot and hotter...  :mindf-ck: hahah jokes aside, OMG TWO MORE SEASONS DECK?! RESERVEEEEE!!! but that makes me wonder what colours will it be for the other two as a pair, the most common pair other than black and white is red and blue, perhaps they could surprise us hint hint  ;D anyway is it confirmed that there'll be two more season decks in the future?!

Well 4 seasons, Winter- White
                           Summer- Black(I guess Burnt?)
                           Spring- Green
                            Fall- Orange/Yellow/Brown

idk these are just guesses.

Anyway I can't wait for these, but now that 4 will eventually be released I am going to be even poorer :( but they will probably be beautiful :)

Aaron, the two decks coming out now are spring (white) and autumn/fall (black).

I could imagine a green (grass) or red (heat, sunburn) deck for summer and a blue (ice) one for winter.

Hmm, I guess the most likely colour choices for a pair would be those two, red (Summer) and blue (Winter), do they browse the forums much? I know the creator of the decks have an account here, I'll sent a pm asking whether they've started on their next deck yet, maybe we could get more information or perhaps some whole new colour instead of the typical red-blue-pair hint hint  ;D but then again, season's are never in a way typical  ;)

Yup, you would never think collecting something like playing cards could be such a financial drain. It is getting a little crazy. Being a bit older than a # of you who hang out on the forum I have had opportunities to make money in stockmarkets and other ventures so I do have some money to squander on my strange hobby but I wonder sometimes how many of you youngsters keep up with everything. These Seasons do look great, I would love to get a few but I may let this one pass me. I am sure soon enough we will be talking about another beautiful deck we have to get. Mind you, I say this now but I am going to keep checking this thread for more info on the release date. :-[

Hey guys,

I was chatting with Alex Chin today, and he gave me some info to pass along...

so here we go...

Launch Date:  April 30th (no specific time... yet)

Limits:  as is stands, there will be a limit of 12 decks per customer per order. NOT 12 OF EACH DECK.

Where to buy:  the decks will only be available from www.seasonsplayingcards.com (http://www.seasonsplayingcards.com) on the launch date

What about AceKing & Fullboatdealer?:   Fullboat may have decks at a later date, and AceKing is no longer involved

Payments:  the site will accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and Paypal

Coupon codes?:  The ESS20 code will give 20% off the entire cart... for the first 150 customers only.

Bundles?  The only bundle that will be available is a uncut bundle  (no free decks with uncuts)

Well, that's all I have for now.

Monday can't get here fast enough...

well with the 12 decks per customer he def. makes them aviable for everyone.fair enough! i wanted to get myself a brick of each deck plus a uncut.
This would be the first uncut sheet i would hang on my walls.the centered court cards look soo great. very unique at this moment and i want this piece of art in my collection.

Will they sell out within minutes?nope but within 1-2 days would be my guess.

I think they will sell out faster than 1-2 days, given this is one of the most anticipated releases. Even with the limit imposed on buyers, I believe this could sell out in less than 1-2 hours!

Well, a brick of each isn't happening for you, Cosmic - the limit is a brick, period.  Six of each!  They're sold in pairs to start with, $20 a pair.

Based on the demand for the Red Artifice when it hit the market for 3K decks, I'd say that, assuming the servers don't collapse and crawl into a corner with PTSD, it will sell out in under a day, but it will take just a little time to sell by the dozen - maybe a handful of hours.
Title: Re: Seasons Playing Cards - Launch April 30th!!
Post by: NathanCanadas on April 26, 2012, 11:46:17 AM
I think it'll sell out in less than 6 hours. With 2350 printed, I don't think all will be immediatly for sale since Alex will want to keep some for himself, friends, and resellers. Also, the Mana sold out VERY quickly, although it was less anticipated than these.

Each release sold out. They only wanted to sell a certain amount, just like Alex Chin does, but because of a huge demand, they had to release them a couple more times.

All 2350 sets will be available at launch.

The only way to get a brick of each or more.. is to do multiple orders.

Alright guys... here it is.....  prices before any discounts

Alex writes...

"It's $25 per set and $50 per uncut. (The reason the uncuts are so high is because it includes the extra costs when shipping a tube)"

"It's the foiling, embossing, and limited quantity that makes us have to charge this high."

"Bricks are discounted 10%....  it only activates if you don't use the coupon code. It gives people a chance that wasn't first to still save"

and explaining the uncuts

"the way it worked out is that the surcharge is included in the uncuts.

Example: Normally shipping priority tube to Canada would be  $26 but this way if you order them its only $10"

Anyone get some clarity on the pricing issue yet?
I hate to have such a short post, but what pricing issue?

About it being $25/ set.

Personally I think that is ridiculous. That is $75 for 6 decks! Why are small independant companies makeing their decks so expensive now?! :o :-\ >:( I will get 2 sets if I am in the first 150 but if not I am going to pass on these altogether. I could buy something much better for $50 than 4 decks >:(

Don... You were always a Joker in my book...  And if you wouldn't mind... 11:11 CST or CDT is what time for us NYers... Just please let me know what time I'll be able to get the deck... These foreign time calculations and the comparisons of CST vs. CDT have my head whirling... I'll research it later to get a firm grasp, but for now what are we working with... Thanks, J.

This time issue is a problem.

11:11 PM and 12:11 PM are 11-hours apart, not 1-hour. 12:11 PM is early in the afternoon while 11:11 PM is nearly midnight. And 11:11 PM CST is actually 12:11 AM CDT but you have a date change involved which makes it even more messy. I can't wait to hear this nailed down from multiple sources.

Aaron, please stop trying to come into the conversation to say something that doesn't fit or make sense. It seems normal that Alex Chin gets the time right so everyone can be on time and no one complains. Also, according to DelMagic, his mistake may be a 12 hour difference. Will you wait 12 hours? Many people are at work and can't even wait 1 hour. This will surely get cleared up, but in the meantime lets let Alex do what he feels is appropriate.

I would like to know how that doesn't "fit or make sense" From what Don said it looks like I was right. :-\

Alex origianly said that they would be released 11:11PM CST, that doesn't exist, he obviously just found out and has now said that the release is at 11:11PM CDT. I said that he must have mistaken what he said and we should go with 11:11PM CDT. I dont get how that post didn't make sense or fit.

I helped people, unlike the post you make critisizing a post i made that was useful. I could easily say that your post doesn't make sense or fit, the only difference would be I am correct that it doesn't fit.

If there is anyone else who thinks my post was useless please tell me because i don't think it was.

Re-read DelMagic's statement:

DelMagic was the ONLY PERSON who said ANYTHING about the release time being 12:11PM!  It would NEVER be confused in such a fashion.  I don't know about where you live, but where I live, we only adjust our clocks by one hour, NOT BY ELEVEN HOURS!

The release time is 11:11pm "Central time", and it would appear that Alex made a common mistake: in trying to make his time look "official," he simply wrote "CST" without considering that Central Standard Time is only in effect in the Central Time Zone for just under half of a given year and that this isn't that half.  To confuse things further, many countries use the "S" part of the abbreviation to mean "Summer" as in "CEST" for "Central European Summer Time" or "LST" for "London Summer Time".  And in many Asian nations, they don't make any twice-yearly time changes at all.

The worst off anyone could have been would have been a single hour.  Your post wasn't useless as much as it was confused.  Know what you're talking about before you talk if you're putting yourself forth as some kind of authority on the topic.

I like the look of the cards a lot, but $25 for two decks before shipping (whatever that will be) just seems too high to me. It's a pretty huge change from the original $15 per set price they mentioned.

At $15, these sounded awesome.
At $20, they're great.
At $25, they give me pause.  And they make me wonder why the price keeps going higher and higher.

I really wanted to get this deck, but I'm becoming allergic to rip-offs.  I'm going to pass.

Only serious mismanagement could increase costs high enough to require them to make the deck 67% more expensive.  Someone's trying to make serious coin on this deck, period.

Well the only reason I can think of why the prices skyrocketed is that they figured their decks are going to be highly anticipated and they decided to "cash in". And no, I'm not going to take design costs as an excuse.

So the price issue....

Back on Sept 16th, 2011, Alex made this comment on a post at the Seasons FB page..

" Liran, they are a limited edition run due to high production costs. Evan, If you purchase through kickstarter they'll be $15 a (2 deck) set. If there are any left they will be sold at $20 retail. I appreciate the interest. Feel free to tell your friends about it."

Now.. 7 months have passed.  I'm sure there were expenses that came up that weren't planned for.  Additions to the deck to enhance it.

Maybe Alex should have held off giving out prices 7 months ago before the printing was done.  But look at what's changed since then...

He was going to do Kickstarter back then... instead he took on 2 partners (AceKing & Fullboat) to fund the project... then AceKing stepped out.

TONS of decks come out, and they are automatically $10+... the one that stands out to me the most is the Tungstene deck.  If I'm not mistaken, it was nearly $20 when it came out.. and that deck is hideous compared to these beauties.,, and those was from one of the BIG companies we all deal with.

I'm more than happy to open up my wallet to dish out the cash for this set.  In almost 4 years of collecting, I've never seen a set of decks that I've wanted more.  Those tuckboxes are AMAZING.  IMO... this should be the benchmark for card design, period.

Maybe Alex should have held off giving out prices 7 months ago before the printing was done.  But look at what's changed since then...

The problem is that in this very topic (page 10) Alex posted {emphasis mine}

So in the last month they've gone up from $20 each (with no early supporter code), to $25.  Sure there is 20% off but only for the first 150 customers.  As frostchew says, it's just a bit of blatant money grabbing for what we all know is going to sell well.

Like many others here, I was intending to buy up (reasonably) big.  Whilst the 6 set limitation per order did stem that a little, the $25 price makes me wonder whether I need more than 1 set.

We have to remember that this - despite being (in my opinion) the most beautiful design I've seen - it's only 56 bits of card in a cardboard box.

Of course someone wants to make money out of this.  It's a business.

From the March 29th quote
"They'll be kept at $19.95 a pair"

So, it's basically gone up $2.50 per deck.  But if you use the 20% code.. it's back to $20.
Even if you are not able to use the code... if you buy a brick.. you get 10% off...  making it 22.50 per set (only 1.25 more per deck)

11.25 per deck if you buy a brick.

I for one think it's fine considering...

Faithful was the wrong word. I meant to say that by keeping on increasing the price he is kinda loosing my trust as well as the trust of some collectors who were decided to buy his decks. 25$ isn't too bad for 2 decks of this caliber, but I find it a bit disappointing that he changes the price twice in 2 weeks. Let's hope it stays stable at 25$ though.

$25 for 2 decks just isn't reasonable the way I see it. Other companies sell their decks for $10 max for fully custom, not $25 for 2 decks! That is $135(with discount) for a Brick before shipping. Kickstarter decks that are $9-$11 decks are a little high, but already have shipping included and discounted for International buyers. I cant get myself to pay $25 for 2 new decks that were going to cost $15 and even a week ago $20. He is just seeing that there is high demand and trying to capitalize on that. The sad part is that these will still sell-out fast and be sold by re sellers for 2x this. I planned on getting 3 sets of these, but now I am going to pass on them altogether. I am not going to support someone trying to make some fast cash by constantly raising his decks price.

CBJ, if you will order these decks tomorrow, good for you. We are making a point, not just for the Seasons decks, but with all decks in general. Custom playing card prices are rapidly growing just so the makers can make even more money, and us, the buyers, are the ones getting ***ked. It's just not fair. No matter how good the deck, it shouldn't cost this much, especially when the sellers know they have a very high demand.

For my part, I would say I think the price is reasonable because

so $ 25 is the usual price what worries me is the cost shipping to France: S

Encarded offered the Tendril with the special sticker as a nod to collectors.  And they paid for it.  It didn't come out until after the deck was a sell-out, didn't it?

Cosmo's deck is a magic deck intended for use in tricks.  Totally different animal.  It couldn't be used in standard game play and thus has a much more limited appeal, and a more limited potential buyer pool.  I've paid upwards of $80 for a trick deck, but that's because it's part of my routine and can be used to make money.

That discount?  Nearly useless for comparison purposes because of the fact that only a small number of people will get to use it.  And the brick discount?  Unless someone burns though cards like I use tissues, you only buy by the brick if you're reselling or collecting with the intent of future resale.

No one would deny that Alex made a great deck and deserves to be rewarded for it.  I just don't feel like I should be paying that much of his reward out of my own pocket.  If you feel otherwise, that's your option.  I have a wedding to pay for.

How is it not fair, he put work and effort into his deck and has a right to charge what he wants for it. If you don't want it don't buy it, if no-one buys it the price will drop. If anything because he knows there's a high demand and low supply he will be able to sell for a higher price.

I almost have my dad convinced to pay half for me to get a brick of these. Its funny how much easier it is to buy something when you arn't spending your own money. ;D I think he should though, I have bought every other deck of cards I own. ;)

NathanCanadas, our master of hyperbole...  :))

Nathan, LauR is right in that anyone can charge anything for whatever they want to sell (or close enough to it, especially for non-essential and luxury items).  And you as a consumer are within your rights to buy or not buy as you deem fit.  There's nothing about fairness that comes into play.  There are other playing cards on the market, some very reasonably-priced ones that do the job just fine - no one is required to own a pair of Seasons, or must have them in order to survive...

But LauR, there's a limit as to what the market will bear, and right now, Alex Chin is pushing past that limit.  It's not even a matter of knowing what a deck costs to produce - many of us if not most know the material costs, but you can't measure the artistic inspiration in the same way, and we acknowledge that.  But at the same time, we also know what a fair price is for a new pack of playing cards at retail (and not resale), even a very beautiful pack like this one, and frankly, $25 a pair isn't that price.  $20 a pair was pushing it but still within the bounds, especially when all those people who liked the FB fan page for this deck thought they were getting a 20% off discount.  Now that's been yanked and replaced with "only the first 150 customers".  10% for buying a BRICK is a shabby attempt at a substitute, because most mere mortals don't buy playing cards by the brick unless they're using those bricks to build their home.

Market practices are steered in part by consumers that are willing to buck trends, especially trends that increasingly don't favor them.  Alex Chin could have made a lot of money on this deck WITHOUT being limited to 2500 pairs, but he opted for the "limited is better" train of thought.  But that train is derailing.  People are fed up with nearly every single deck being a limited edition, tired of watching the price per deck increase not only in the aftermarket but even at the manufacturer's suggested retail price.

As beautiful as this deck looks, I for one do not consider it to be one thousand percent as good as a pack of Bicycle Rider Backs, and won't pay one thousand percent of the price for it.  If he wanted to make more money on it, he should have opted to make more decks - he could have lowered his price while increasing his profit margin, and the market demand was without a doubt in my mind high enough to still sell this deck through to twice or three times as many units.

I will not be buying this deck.  Amazingly, I will still survive, life will still go on, and I'll still be a happy individual.  If the price changes or there's a second printing, maybe I'd reconsider my position.

If you feel the same way I do, people, I advise you to follow my example.

It's funny... People are crying about $12.50 per deck when these same people will go buy a Magic Con II Deck for $30-$40... Just stop your crying already... The designer is just looking to make some money for a change, and from what it looks like it is a nice deck and was not rushed or done half @$$ at all... The scenario you are proposing is what? He sells them for $7.50 per deck, then all the @$$#0LE$ buy bricks and bricks till they're sold out and then charge $50 a set on eBay??? Buy or Don't Buy - those are your options... Crying is not one of those options... Anyhow I've got bigger fish to fry and by bigger fish I mean better and more collectible decks and there are also other new and unique decks like the Americana to consider...

JMRock, it was less about the asking price, more about the increasing price.

And on that topic, I actually got a reply from Alex through FB a little while ago:

Yeah we're dealing with it right now. Honestly it's because the art fees were very high. We've had more than 4 and a half grand in art fees and revisions (raising our costs 20%) It would have been 20 a pop otherwise.

So, it seems the money grab isn't Alex's - it's USPC's, in hidden fees!  He wouldn't be the first artist around here to end up getting the short end of the stick from USPC.

Based on this, I have to reconsider my position on this subject.  He's as much caught in the vise as his customers are.  Granted, making a less-limited print run might have helped him, but hindsight's not something that's helping him right about now.

EDIT: I just got off the phone with Alex Chin and we talked at length about what's happening with his project.  There's many things I can't really discuss here, but what I can tell you is this - this is one of the most expensive decks made by USPC ever.  And they actually gave him and his partner a break on the charges for the art - but it was STILL expensive.

To compound matters, there was a minor problem with the printing.  I'll let him put it in his own words, since he posted this on Facebook a little while ago.

 Hi Guys,
There’s been quite a bit of a turn of events recently. I’m not one for essays but I feel it was a bit necessary to clear up the air. If you’re not a reader, feel free to browse the newly updated photo gallery that’s been uploaded on the side. But for those looking for answers, here’s pretty much everything plus some.

Since the start, all I’ve ever wanted to do was create a deck that was timeless. Good design should be timeless, a trait especially applicable to collections. Of all things I wanted to create a deck of cards that you would be just as happy owning 30 years from now as you were the first day you bought it. As a card collector myself I didn’t want someone to regret purchasing this deck a week or month later. Any deck you are willing to pay good money for should be as timeless as the rest of your collection.

From start to finish this deck has taken almost a year to create. From sketch to computer, to submission and countless revisions, to the 8 weeks it took to get through a delayed printing process, these sets embody the heart and soul of what Seasons represents:

A higher standard of quality for card collectors and performers like you regardless of obstacles.
With intricate embossing, gold foiling, over 120 external linked files for the art department to address the court cards just right, and an unheard of short run, it’s not a lie when we were told that this was one of the most expensive costs-per-deck created in a while. It’s also no joke when we were told that these cards rank at top as one, if not THE MOST DETAILED DECKS the United States Playing Card Company has ever printed. Period.

I hope you get the same overwhelming feeling that I did when you first receive your cards. They felt perfect.  NO. That would be even more expensive and delay our launch another couple months. These decks are still something we’re EXTREMELY proud of. This discount will be on the entire site for your entire cart until we sell out. The limits and launch date will still stay the same.

Otherwise if you’re more of a performer, feel free to come back in a couple months for possibly a second set. Without you there would be no us which is why we’re putting all our cards on the table for people to see. Pun intended. We want to be open and honest and together just maybe, we can start raising the bar of design in playing card history.

What DOES concern me is that I still can't see anything at all on his site. Windows and Mac, I just get a blank page. I sure would like that to show up soon so I at least will be able to view things when I want to get some...

I don't wanna complain on the price of these decks.
I'll buy them anyway.

But don't you guys thinks that decks are tend to released at higher and higher price?
Dont forget that the bicycle are still 2$ a pack.
The good price for custom decks is around 5-7$ (Just like T11, E)

But now price of decks are increased to be 10$ a deck.
And it will be more & more expense trying to catch up collecting decks.

A big problem is that if these start at 25$ a set, with only 1100 sets available, these will probably be sold out in a matter of minutes. I know of very few decks that start at such a price. The price itself may be acceptable, judging by the amount of work put into the deck, but not everyone will be able to get theirs immediately, and many collectors will suffer from the retail price, which, (wait a couple weeks and you'll see I'll be right), will be 2, maybe 3 time higher.

Alex, as I've stated before in PMs I think your cards are gorgeous!! I will definitely be purchasing some tonight. I'm sad to hear you had to go through a lot of prepress headaches.

For your next deck I would suggest trying to rasterize your finished AI files into Photoshop at hi res. Having a lot of placed images in an AI file can cause a lot of unforseeable problems when trying to open them on a different computer from the one they were created on. A lot of the problems could be alleviated by converting all the type to outlines, saving the file as an EPS, and opening the EPS into Photoshop at 100% scale at 450 dpi or greater. The files will be flat, unworkable art but that is good for the prepress department, as there is a lot less room for error. A lot of problems that might occur during printing would be noticeable when the files are converted to bitmap (ex. - say a yellow color fill is accidentally set to Overprint in AI, it would rasterize as an Overprint and be very noticeable). Converting them to bitmap could result in the loss of some small-scale vector details, but as long as they are at a hi resolution of at least 400 dpi (with most printing presses, anything over 450 dpi is overkill) they should only be noticeable under a loop and not by the naked eye.

From reading Lance's posts on the Actuator Decks it sounds like a lot of his delays came about from complex Illustrator files as well. Illustrator is a great program for creating amazing art but it's not the most reliable program when sending complex files to a postscript printer.

thanks, Randy

EDIT: As for the Embossing and Metallic INK elements, they could be rasterized separately and brought into the corresponding face card as separate layers or Alpha Channels. It would add more complexity to the PSD files but they would still be immensely easier for the prepress artist to work with compared to the AI native files.

Tonight at 11:11 PM. There will be a 20% discount for the first buyers only, and a 10% discount for those who buy a brick.

It's ashame that there was a mistake, but it doesn't look that noticeable (at least on the computer), and to me it adds more history and story behind the deck. The price is great, and Alex seems like a very nice guy who made sure not one aspect of this deck was left untouched.

I really hope that he will "complete the year" if you know what I mean, with two more Seasons.

It really sucks that there was a misprint. I definitely recommend all of the purple writing in CBJ's post above. I think it shows true dedication that Alex is going to reprint the deck just because of one little mistake. As I've already said, these decks are probably the nicest looking decks I've ever seen and I will definitely be getting some.

I still have several questions:

1. International shipping costs? I don't believe that Alex doesn't know this information. And I am sure all international customers need this information before release date and time.

2. “While the Primavera Jack of Diamonds itself is fine, the background gradient edges didn't process right.

From what I see problem is not only with edges. One crown of The Jack of Diamonds is darker than another. I am not a specialist but can someone specify this moment?

3.  “It's unfortunate to have this one blemish ruin what would have been a “perfect set” and to keep our standards of quality we will be reprinting this deck and this time I give you my promise that they’ll be flawless.

If we make our money back we’ll reprint this set with our lessons learned from this first round. A second round of  decks would aim to be a bit more affordable as we’ll  drop the foil and embossing processes and run a higher quantity while still keeping the same artwork.

“…Otherwise if you’re more of a performer, feel free to come back in a couple months for possibly a second set…”

Above-mentioned statements are controversial (and it's a fact don't even try to argue about this). So does it mean that Alex will really reprint this set: a) only if he will make his money back; b) this reprint will have GUARANTEED above-mentioned worth quality of boxes; c) this reprint will have GUARANTEED the same quality of cards?

And finally… am I the only one who thinks that this release still (even with that flawed card) isn't ready for normal sale and 1-2 days delay won't lead to the end of the World but will give a chance to specify some additional questions and avoid further possible curse of Alex? From what I see in the Alex’s statement he needs by itself some extra time to think over this situation for making a right and wise decisions with far-reaching effect.

The statements aren't controversial to me. Let me give my thoughts on questions a) b) and c).

a) If he only sells 2-bricks of the current run, he won't bother reprintiing them. Does that concern you? It doesn't concern me. He will sell out this run without a problem so it really isn't an issue. This is the best design I've seen in decades and there is no way they don't sell out. Because they aren't a mainstream deck supplier, it make take longer than we expect, but they will go.

b) I don't even understand your question... but the 2nd run boxes will not be of a premium type, in order to make it a deck which is more affordable.

c)The quality of the cards will be the same as the 1st run but the quantity will be higher.

It's all good news unless you just have to have premium boxes. Give me these in plain white boxes and I'll be happy. I just want the cards.

They may or may not sell out that quickly. Certainly there is a lot of interest in them from a couple dozen people on this board, but they may not have the demand that say a Smoke & Mirrors would have, so hopefully they don't sell out right away.

I still dislike the black deck, but I have to say the white version is easily my favorite design in a very long time. Alex clearly put countless hours into this, and it's really nice to see him succeeding as a result.

I mean seriously, you can't look at the white deck and not get excited.

I'll be picking up a set or two in the aftermarket since I'm totally strapped for cash at the moment, what with a $3k computer purchase & car repairs. I'm hoping the prices don't skyrocket too far, but if they do, I still think it's worth it.

I am very impressed with the foil work on the tuck case specifically. I like shiny things.

Obviously people are focused on the cards more than the box but not only are the cards incredible, the boxes are too! They will be seen from a mile away and it's really cool how 2 or more boxes look together.

I also am not a huge fan of the black deck, but the red court cards just pop! I love how the gold, red, and white make such a beautiful contrast to the background! I wonder if anyone has the guts to "Sharpie" this deck?

I for one love the black deck! Although that's coming from a cardist's point of view, as I'm sure the white is much more practical for magic.

Either way, one hour left boys!

Stop speaking, that has nothing to do with the site being down.  The combination of idiots hitting refresh every second and the host not knowing the demand ahead of time is the culprit.  They aren't going to sell out right away, probably within 6-12 hours or so.

True enough.  And predicting Internet traffic on your first-ever product is about as useful as staring into a crystal ball while holding it up to the sun...  You never have a clue of the precise demand so you hope for the best, prepare for the worst to the best of your abilities and resources.

CBJ... I have never seen you so gaga for a deck ever... I hope it's all that you want it to be... It looks great... Couldn't resist a couple of sets myself... Skipped on the Black Box Edition though... Some Americanas and then time to put a lid on it for a little while...

Now for all you crybabies... Get on there while they're still discounting everything 20% and grab your decks for $10 while you can... When they go back to regular pricing you'll be crying in your pudding again...

The problem, at least for me, is the URLs. When I click on anything on the store it takes me to a blank page. If I put "https://" in the front and add ".gostorego" between "seasonsplayingcards" and ".com" the page loads fine.

Bro, it's not temporary - at least in the sense that it's good until they sell out.  20% off, period, then off to make the second edition (and the two new Seasons decks)...

Hope you're getting those Americanas from me!

Holy cow. That's all I have to say. Thank you guys. I'm driving down to get the cards tomorrow and sign the sheets so that can start going out. I'll try to fix the store urls if that's the issue. The store worked completely fine for me the entire time so it was hard to figure out what you guys were seeing. Obviously the site will try to grow to nip these things in the butt before they happen next time.

But thanks again guys, because just....holy mackeral. Pulled an allnighter last night to individually process all the shipping order possibilities so I'm going to call it a day. But thank you for the support. I truly mean it. If you're having trouble with the site and we still have stock let me know and I"ll personally take care of it for you.

Congrats on a successful launch!

It's nice to see that everyone who wanted the cards got them, even if they freaked out for not getting them the first minute. If Ellusionist's servers/hosts can crash, anyones can. Crashing pages during a launch is expected, luckily I got ahold of my host hours before and had them bump Circle City Card's capacity temporarily.

Also, the URL's are perfectly fine.  When websites start to go down the first think they lose is the ability to forward pages.  Everything will be back to normal once they children stop hitting refresh.

Is it safe to go to that?
I'm really paranoid with dupe sites who copy the real sites and get your money and credit card info. So yeah.

I and from what I've read many others have had the same issue but if you pay with paypal you'll be re directed to the paypal site so you wont have to enter any card details so you should be safe if you can do that.

The performance of the site wasn't unusual given the number of different browsers slamming it. I've seen this kind of thing with other popular collectibles - the Hot Wheels Redline Club site used to get totally slammed whenever a new item would come out because everyone was trying to buy their limit.

I was unable to get in for a while. I just got a blank page, though I had gotten the pages with photos earlier. I tried different browsers and different computers. Eventually, someone on Facebook mentioned using https. I used that and accepted the certificate exception since it looked legit to me and I'm using a virtual machine environment. I was able to get in and create an account, and after that I had no problems.

They were about $50 each. I wanted to get one, and now regret that I didn't, but hey I'm surprised I got any.

At 11p.m. est, I went to bed and set an alarm, for the release time. Some reason it didn't go off, and I woke up at 4a.m., freaking out that I missed the launch. At the time I was up they were still in stock.

All the decks are now SOLD OUT, some uncut sheets still available though. @loldudex2, I was tempted by one also but the extra $27 (minus the $20 for the set) was a little much for me, I'm trying to cut back a little so I couldn't really buy it.

Are they the same as the one's released by DnD but with the seasons logo? Also how many decks did you get?

Just wait for version two if it is high.  Version one will likely go down in price - or perhaps you'll just get version two at retail instead.

I don't know what the issue was, but many of us had that problem. I was only able to access the site once they were sold out. What browser/computer were you using? Alex Chin said he knew that problem was taking place but didn't know how to solve it since he wasn't experiencing it himself.

Hi!

Quick question:

Everybody/anybody in USA, got charged SALES TAX?
I live in California and I was charged sales tax.
I saw on the tracking info that they are shipping from Ohio...
I think you are supposed to charge sales tax only for states where you have a physical presence, like a warehouse, store, etc.

Thanks, JJ.

I had the same situation and checked out as guest. I did create an account on the site with the same email address and info I used on PayPal a few hours later once the site was functional; however, my order info is not listed. I surmise that all of us who checked out as guests probably wont be able to see any shipment confirmation. Not sure if the PayPal order confirmation will be updated with shipping status. Has anyone seen that? Mine shows payment completion but no shipment. No worries though. At least I was able to submit an order. The site always refreshed to a blank page but THANK YOU to the person who posted the observation to add the ".gostorego" to the URL. With that info, persistence, and a bit of luck I was able to very slowly make my way through to the PayPal checkout screen at about 4:00 AM MST.

If I believed in such things I'd say karma or something was rewarding me for that all nighter I endured during the Red Artifice fiasco where I didn't move away from my computer for about 15 hours and came away empty handed. 8^)

Some states have passed legislation requiring that Internet purchases shipped to their state pay sales taxes.  New York does this - I used to buy tax-free from Amazon, but not any longer.

Shipping could depend on what you bought, but I also got the impression that it might take a few days to get them all out. I set up an account and paid through PayPal. I got my order confirmation and PayPal receipt, but no shipping conf yet. No sales tax to Washington state.

My experience was that I got a blank page on both Firefox and IE on Windows 7, and on two different computers. I tried a hard refresh (Ctrl-F5) several times, and that didn't help. I cleared my cache with no change. Finally, I saw someone mention switching to https, so I did that and it worked immediately. I had to accept a certificate exception, but I didn't see a problem with doing that since the certificate was from the gostorego domain.

D&D are from California, so they need to charge sales tax for orders in California.
I'm never charged sales tax from Amazon for example.

I noticed that the black deck has thinner borders than the white deck. Is this true or are my eyes deceiving me?
I also noticed that one side of the double backer on both decks is darker than the other side and darker than the rest of the deck. Does anyone else see this too?

Almost all double backers have different colors, especially darker ones. Check the Artifices for a great example, even my Brimstones have a slight difference.

I thought about it... is it because its printed identical on both sides so the ink basically may have gone through to the other side and made it darker?

Possibly, but then wouldn't both sides be darker than a normal back?

Yeap, the borders on my seronda is thinner than primavera as well. and I just realized when I held the deck for the first time, that the backs are actually more unique instead of just being an inverted black-white color difference. And as for the double backers, the color difference are slightly more obvious for the black than the white but like Russell said, it's almost unavoidable that double backers have slight color difference.

That's what's so great about this set of cards. The two decks share a basic design but have unique features and shading, unlike other black and white decks that are just plainly inverted.

i liked the backs of the white deck better, but i liked the faces on the black deck more. the colors seem to be more accented on the black deck because of the contrast. either way though these decks are gorgeous!

its a lot of fun doing flourishes with the deck because there is always something great to look at while your doing them instead of being stuck with some boring standard faces.

I agree, I actually like the black deck more as well in this case, mainly due to the thinner borders which will look awesome during fans. The red pips do stand out very well too. Trying to resist myself from overusing it though due to chippings which is unavoidable for any black decks..

I was trying to figure out just what language the two names of these decks comes from.  Primavera is a common name for spring in many Latin-based languages.  But neither French, Italian nor Spanish used the word "seronda" for a season.

I did some Google-spelunking and found a page listing the seasons in many languages, even the artificial ones, and finally hit upon the one language on the list that called autumn "seronda" - Asturian, a Latin-based language spoken by a bit over a half-million people living in the Asturias region of northern Spain.  First known written use of the language dates to 1155 CE.

Anyway, assuming the next two Seasons decks will use names of seasons from the same language, the "summer" deck will be called Branu and the "winter" deck will be called Iviemu.

I'm kind of hoping he changes languages, seeing those names.  They don't exactly roll off the tongue!

Post by: shutupdangit on May 07, 2012, 05:33:47 AM
I'm surprised it took that long to look up Seronda. When I googled "Seronda translation" it gave me the result immediately.

Anyway, I'd prefer Klingon for the language of the next set.

I got mine today. I ordered 6 sets. I wasnt very impressed with the packaging. 2 of my deck boxes are dented. They should have put them in a brick box. Overall i wasnt too impressed with the deck as much as I thought I would be. I think im going to keep one set and trade most of them.
Title: Re: Seasons Playing Cards - SOLD OUT!

I was surprised by the packaging as well. Two non-padded flat-rate priority mail envelopes were used to ship 12 decks and 2 custom box sets. There were 2 additional envelopes in each (one padded, one not)

In the current environment, when one orders a brick of a newly released custom deck it is standard practice for it to come in a brick box. Also, for the cost of two envelopes they might as well have used a flat-rate medium box. It would have protected everything better and there would only be one parcel to deal with.

My items showed no damage so I am relieved. I hope they pay attention and improve packaging for the next release.

Hi guys,

As you might imagine it's pretty busy on the backend. All orders from the launch will be fully processed by Wednesday (Thursday latest). The notification isn't set up completely with Paypal to let people know of orders shipped with tracking despite having shipped them. Some will go process while others (who may have done direct payment) will have the "processing" status. Rest assured that by Thursday all orders will have been shipped out. Our contact form has been updated and we should be receiving your messages properly now if you'd like to chat :)

The borders were a delight to see done well. The decks were meant to both be equally as thin as the black border is now. There is a "buffer zone" for decks for Q1 quality in case of any slight shifts in the sheets of production. The decks intentionally tried to push that boundary. The white deck was corrected by the art department but in the hussle and bussle it seams that the black deck managed to sneak through. I'm very glad to see the quality of the deck come out.

The decks were printed individually so that bricks came in just white or just black. We chose to ship via envelope because currently for us it has been the most economical way to ship for both international and domestic. Internationally, a medium flat rate shipping box is $50 which is about 25% more for shipping than (2) small flat rates. Shipping has been by far the biggest challenge of all of this to deal with both the international and domestic side of things and trying to make sure that each side is paying a proper shipping amount that is still fair. I would love to hear your preferred shipping method for your decks and what country you are from. Our next release will hopefully provide a larger range of shipping options to accommodate your requests :)

As far as names go, I'll probably have to mix up the languages a bit hahaha. Indeed Boyer, there was a reason why I picked the first 2 names.

-Chin

I got my decks today, would have had them yesterday but Royal Mail couldn't fit it through the letterbox, for anyone who wants to know, I'm in the UK and didn't recieve any notification of shipping but they got here so maybe yours has been sent if your wondering, Alex confirms that above of course. My decks were packaged really well btw, very very secure.

These have definately lived up to my expectations, they are just wonderful, the tuck case is stunning and by far one of if not my favourites along with smoke and mirrors v1-v3, the thought that has gone into the tuck case alone really shows the heart that went into designing this deck and the back design is just splendid. I was expecting to prefer the Primavera deck over the Seronda but I must say that the thinner borders on the Seronda deck helps show the design in fans and such, thats not to say the slightly thicker borders are an issue, they are not. Black decks with black borders look really nice imo and these are no exception. The New Magic Finish and Aristocrat stock is a great combination and so I expect them when broken in to handle wonderfully.

My thanks go out to you Alex Chin.

Thanks guys for the kind words :D

As far as shipping goes, all shipments are officially sent out. Residents of California and New York will be refunded the tax charge at checkout. I had gotten confused on all the new online tax laws so for that I apologize.  Those applicable for tax refunds will be going out today and tomorrow.

Thanks again for all the support :)

I don't know why but the court cards and indexes remind me very much of the artifice deck (especially the queens). Anyone else?

Hopefully you get them soon, I received mine last week, was quite surprised with the speed of the shipping. But you really never can know about these types of thing, the speed of service to Canada seems to change all the time

Gorgeous decks, absolutely gorgeous. This is art condensed into a set of playing cards. I had to grab a bunch of sets and the collector's box, and received it all in no-time. Excellent job, Alex!

I have to tell you... I'm looking to unload some stuff before summer, and even though I could quickly flip these Seasons decks for a profit, I can't bring myself to do it... I've even gone so far as taking pics for eBay, and then I'm like... "Wait, these are some really nice f*#@ing decks..." And they go right back into the collection... I mean they are really, really nice... The embossed box, the gold, the design... everything done just perfectly... class act all around... Well done...

Hi,

May I ask has anyone here yet to receive their decks? I am residing in Singapore and still waiting for mine. From what I know, others that are in Singapore have already received them around 2 weeks ago.

Please let me know I am not the only one left.  :(
