Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Fool the Discourse
« on: May 02, 2012, 02:10:46 PM »
So, Penn and Teller: Fool Us was a lot of fun.  I thought it might be fun to expand on the idea with a thread here.  Just upload a video of a trick and see how long it takes someone to work out how you did it (we'll try to speak in code in our answers but you DO have to let someone know when they get it close enough to correct).  I'll keep a leaderboard of the top 5 tricks that last the longest unsolved as long as the thread is active.  What do you guys think?  Sound Fun?

CLARIFICATION: Original stuff only, please.  No breaking copyright and if we work i out because we bought it, too, that ruins the fun.

Leaderboard

Just getting rid of a few extras to make a bit of much needed cash.  I'm using Google Checkout to process transactions; I think you may need to have/make a Google account to pay but you might not.  I can send invoices in the exact same way that you could with PayPal but please bare in mind that I've never done this before so there's a chance you might have to bare with me if anything doesn't work as expected (although it seems very simple and I don't expect any delays).  I'll calculate shipping after every order is placed and before any invoice is sent and give you options where available.  Everything is sealed.  Due to the continually changing nature of exchange rates, I can't guarantee that my conversion into USD is completely accurate and should be taken as a rough guide. Here's the stock;

DJPK (poor quality Bee knock-offs); £1 / $1.59
Blue Rider Back (Erlanger 2009) x2; £2 each / $3.17 each
Karnival Hornets; £5 / $7.93
Smoke and Mirrors v6; £15 / $23.78
Karnival Dead Eyes (foil v2); £5 /$7.93
Blue Crown Set (all colours V2 and Black, 4 decks total); £30 / $47.56
90s Ceasar's Palace deck (uncancelled); £10 / $15.85
Ellusionist Infinity; £6 / $9.50
Gemaco Alpha (Fitzgerald's casino deck); £2 / $3.17
USPCC (not T11) Guardians; £6 / $9.50
David Blaine White Lions (Series A Blue); £13 / $20.61
Karnival Dose (foil v2); £5 / $7.93
Friar's Club (Orange); £20 / $31.70
Shadow Masters (Air Cushion)x2; £6 / $9.50 each
D&D Fantastique; £7 / $11.10
D&D Fulton's Clip Joint; £7 / $11.10
Bicycle Black Pirate; £10 / $15.85
Bicycle 2008 Election (Democrat and Republican); £8 / $12.68 for both

This isn't my auction but its been around for a few days and no bids yet.  I can't bid on it because I don't (and won't) have a PayPal account BUT I've seen these sell for $50 a deck and because they're starting at 99c, I figure someone might pick up a bargain on these and still turn a profit... maybe sell/trade one on to me.

Feedback + Support / Hidden images and URL not formatting correctly
« on: January 21, 2012, 06:47:46 AM »

What's up with the images that are behind the main board?  I can only see them while the page is loading but I'm assuming they're there all the time?

Also, I dunno about anybody else but when I post long URLs, the formatting screws up.

https://www.google.com/search?gcx=c&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=long+url#q=long+url&hl=en&safe=off&prmd=imvns&ei=lKUaT9WOKMvFswbi3q1H&start=80&sa=N&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&fp=2303290c933ce3a0&biw=1240&bih=663

Just a bit of beta testing I'm doing, there.

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Stolen Cards (Lennart Green)
« on: December 19, 2011, 11:30:51 PM »
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_vGWu9VVyQ

Just thought I'd share this nice little routine I came across.  The method is pretty obvious if you pay attention but I really like the rainbow deck idea...   so I made one with a whole bunch of extra jokers from decks I've collected and I now have a deck of 52 cards with 49 different backs.  I use the 4 aces out of a blue rider back for the force cards and obviously mine, for the most part, aren't as rare as Lennart's but it's a nice little item and it's a bunch of fun to do.  One for those, like myself, who are collectors who like simple card tricks.

Looks like an infinite loop, possibly caused by having multiple tabs open?  If you close one of those pop-ups, another identical one takes it place, so I'm guessing whatever loop is going through the posts to find new ones is hitting the first one and never ending.

Also, is there a way to disable this feature?  Personally, I like to open new forum posts in new tabs and work my way through them like that so this feature is doing noting for me but blocking off the far right of the screen; can we have an option to disable it?

EDIT; If you make a thread, it also lists the first post as a reply to that thread (i.e it informs you of new pots even if it was you who made the new post).

Also, sometimes it isn't just one post, I've gotten an endless loop of about 8 notifications that just go round and round; when you close one, it just goes back to the bottom of the stack.

It also lists an edit to a post as a new post, I think.

Playing Card Plethora / Aether Cards Second Deck; Harlequin Series
« on: November 29, 2011, 01:16:43 AM »
OK, Alex sent me the link which is a reveal teaser to the second Aether Cards deck.  I'm not going to post the image and I'm sure you'll all get to see it before long.  I'm going to give a little info and my own impressions; bear in mind, this was a teaser picture and my impressions could be way off what Alex is going for, and will probably be very different from your own.  If you ask a question, I'll respond to it but I'm trying to to give too much away here, so I might be kinda cryptic.  I like cryptic.

Actual info; these will have a pre-release sale so you can get in early just like the Vortex.  This will be coming sooner than most people are probably expecting (sooner than I was, anyway).  They will be fully customized and maintain the symmetry-pip layout of the Vortex.  That's all  :P

As for overall impressions; the Vortex deck is an out-there design.  It's very different to the norm.  The second deck doesn't seem to be going in that direction; it's certainly not your standard custom job and I strongly feel that it stands out amongst everything else that's going on but it's a refinement of, or maybe a new take on, things we have seen before.  It's more 'simple' but it's detailed and elegant and I think beautiful.  I'll say this; it really is my kind of deck and I'm already really excited for it.

One thing to please bear in mind before posting here; heed Dudley from Street Fighter's advice and keep it classy; no need for abuse and name calling.  Ever.

Even though i am "christian" i don't believe in the idea of "god" but of a higher power.

But i celebrate christmas.

I didn't want the holiday thread to get caught up in a religious debate; not the place for it but I was curious about this statement and I have to ask.  To me, Christian would denote a belief that Jesus Christ was the son of God, saved our souls and is one with God.  Not believing in 'God' but a higher power of some kind to me should be described as 'Deism'.

Also, do you believe in the Christian moral code and do you believe that morality comes from God?

Playing Card Plethora / Gemaco Casino Decks
« on: November 11, 2011, 09:29:45 PM »
I got a brick off AceKing because they're borderless and dirt cheap.  Actually playing around with them, I was impressed, initially.  They actually fanned pretty well and were good for anything I wanted to do.
Then I tried another one (Golden Nugget deck with a gold back; actually quite pretty).  Amazing; it felt great, perfect fan, perfect faro, instantly one of my favourite decks.
Then I busted out a third; a turquoise Iron Horse deck... horrible, clumpy sticky and felt like cheap cardboard in general.  The 4th was in between; not too bad but not good either.  What is going on with these decks?  How can some be so good and some so bad?
They look identical apart from the casino branding, they've obviously been printed at the same factory.  What gives?  Anyone else tried these cards?
Don't get me wrong, I'd happily drop another $20 or whatever for another brick if 1/4 of them are as good as that nugget deck but I don't get how the quality is so massively variable.

Playing Card Plethora / IAOCP; open it?
« on: November 09, 2011, 12:39:18 PM »
OK, so I finally received my copy of If an Octopus Could Palm today; tried to order it the day the closed the store for the revamp and have been waiting since then.  I really don't know if I should open the deck.  Thing is, I've got lots of really nice cards that I've opened to practice/play with and the value of these cards is only going to go up.  I mean, I really like using standard Bees; they suit me, is there really a good reason to open up a deck whose value is going to go up?  I guess this could be a more general discussion about opening rare decks.

Playing Card Plethora / Why borders?
« on: October 11, 2011, 05:47:30 PM »
I've been wondering for a while why magicians prefer cards with borders?  Surely, they don't look as good in fans and aren't as good at concealing moves?  So, what's the upside?
